Commercial vehicle sales crash 89% in March 2020

Commercial vehicle segment registered a massive drop in sales in March 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sales crashed by 89% compared to the same period last year.

Tata Motors' domestic sales dropped 89.52% from 50,917 units in March 2019 to 5,336 units. Exports also went down from 5,619 units to 1,787 units.

Ashok Leyland registered a 91% drop in sales. The company sold just 1,787 units in March 2020 compared to 20,521 in March 2019.

Mahindra's domestic CV sales in March 2020 dropped 90% to 2,325 units. Volvo Eicher recorded an 89% year-on-year decline in sales. The company sold 1,499 units in March 2020.

As a manufacturer of Bus Air-conditioners and Truck refrigeration units, I realised that most of my customers have stopped purchase in Jan itself.
Bus body building takes 2 months, and there is 90 day CRTM registration valid for 90 days issued at first, and body building and final registration has to be done before this expires. As BS6 chassis were not available, till Feb end no one wanted to risk buying BS4 chassis till then.
