Mahindra Defence Systems has started delivering the first units of the Armado Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV) to the Indian Army.

The Mahindra Armado is designed for a wide variety of defence applications. According to the company, the Armado ALSV can be used in counter-terrorist and special forces operations. It can also be used by quick reaction teams, as a reconnaissance vehicle and for patrolling the borders. The vehicle offers ballistic protection up to B7, Stanag Level II.

Re: The Armored Mahindra ALSV looks awesome

Pretty good for Rs 81 Lac / $ 100K each !
Rs 1,100 Cr for 1,300 units

I mean considering the massive costs in handling the Army's requirements & years of R&D and red tape

Plus it comes with a sunroof for the gunner i guess which some people love !!

Humvees are $ 250k for base variants. Another $125K for upgrades, and thats when US Govt buys. Probably higher for others.

Re: The Armored Mahindra ALSV looks awesome

So I was curious on what NATO grade diesel means. Apparently there are NATO standards published as part of NATO Standardization Agreements (STANAGs) that talk about fuel specifications. For example, the NATO F-54 diesel fuel specification is different from commercial diesel as it has

1. Higher Cetane Numbers for better performance.
2. Better Stability and Storage characteristics
3. Better Lubricity via additives.
4. Compatible across NATO equipment used in different countries so that spares can be interchanged.

I was thinking these engines would run on anything resembling fuel, but they appear to be quite picky on what can be used.

Good to see this finally rolling off the production line. Is this short bed crew cab configuration the main one for the Mahindra Armado or will the ordered vehicles come in a variety of configurations?

Was just trying to work out how they're fitting 8 in that cab, unless there's a full size variant without the short payload bed at the back.

Thanks for sharing the price. $100k/unit seems reasonable for this sort of thing when you compare it to similar such vehicles. The replacement for the Humvee, the Oshkosh JLTV retails at about $350k/unit last I checked.

There is though the long standing argument that what's considered a light tactical vehicle has ballooned way out of proportion, to the extent that you see spec ops folks essentially using tuned commercial ATVs and side by sides in missions. It's a tough one for planners to work out the sliding scale for nimble & unsecure at one end to solid but less mobile at the other. I guess those lighter vehicles are easily catered to by domestic manufacturers for Indian needs though.

I forget if this has been discussed already but has the Armado been tested with the IAF and IA's airlift assets in terms of how easy it is to transport them? Would be a handy bonus if they were easily transportable by airlift assets.

I had a chance to see the Armado at the Defence Expo '22 in Gandhinagar.
The nice gentleman from Mahindra gave us a demo of the mortar launchers and all the associated systems . He even lowered the barrel assembly with a touch of a button and allowed us to select a target grid on a touchscreen. Pretty insane for a bunch of college students like us

Impressive specs and performance, I wonder what the GVW of this beast will be (atleast 4T?)

The phenomenal acceleration figures reminds me of airport crash fire tenders which can gallop despite their weight!

Re: The Armored Mahindra ALSV looks awesome

That's a really cool vehicle given the task at hand. Just love the way M&M, TATA bring out these butch vehicles for the Army that cost a fraction of their competitors in other armies. I just hope some YouTuber doesn't do a review of this and say the rear seat comfort is not that great!

Re: The Armored Mahindra ALSV looks awesome

On a lighter note,
Nuts bolts exposed. No LED Projector headlamps. Don't know whether IRVM can be adjusted from inside. It doesn't look like the SUV has auto folding mirrors. Is there a 10" touchscreen system with android auto play, ios manual play, cruise control, steering mounted controls? Is there all door power windows? Whether window panes are there or not? How about auto AC? Whether bonnet can be opened from inside? That latch in bonnet looks like car from 1970s. Rear space looks cramped. In this era of modern cars it is not cool or looking awesome.

P.S: Sunroof, moon roof or star roof? Nah, looks like only bullet proof!

Looks like a more gangster evolution of the Mahindra Marksman.

Happy the Indian carmaker are getting into defense space in a big way. The Indian Army needs specialised vehicles which can be fulfilled by atma-nirbhar bharat.

I would say all the things you have stated are more of luxury then necessity. It is intended to go to wars and not chauffeur drive someone. It has the sturdy build, great specs, basically everything needed for a critical situation. Will Android Auto and Apple CarPlay really make a difference if it serves the purpose just perfectly and that too in a decent price? I would say no. This is what I just could think of, my perspective, nothing personal.

That post of mine was a sarcasm, started it with lighter note. Nothing personal here.

Wonder which the engine is. The Axe had a Merc derived 2.7l inline5 from SsangYong.

The specs point to either the Ford 3.2 or the OM648 from Merc.
