Daimler plans to launch India's first electric truck

According to a media report, Daimler is planning to launch India's first electric truck. The details are expected to be announced at the 'Future Mobility' event which is scheduled to be held next year.

The light-duty Fuso eCanter is Daimler's first all-electric truck that is set to go into series production. It has a payload capacity of up to 3,200 kg and can travel up to 100 km on a single charge. It will be launched in the international market sometime in 2021.

Top commercial vehicle brands in India have already launched electric buses in the market. But, none have shown interest in all-electric trucks. If Daimler's plan to launch an electric truck in India succeeds, the company will get the first-mover advantage.

I don't expect a positive response from the market given the 100 KM range. But, given the 3 ton payload, it can very well help transportation requirement's with in the premises like a factory, warehouses etc.,

Re: Daimler plans to launch India's first electric truck

The trucks might have the strength and torque to haul heavy luggage, but what makes me skeptical and scared are the way the drivers will handle the vehicle. With immediate torque at disposal, serious training would be required to be provided to handle the electric trucks. Hope Daimler provides that too when selling the trucks.

I think electric trucks are a great start to the mass EV transition. Reason: Most trucks run on set routes and dedicated charging can be easily built along the known routes.

Even if meant for exclusive urban use, isn't the 100km range too low?

Re: Daimler plans to launch India's first electric truck

Daimler might actually start a revolution by introducing an electric LCV in India. Even if the range is a (real world) 100 km, it will have some takers if priced right, of course.

Micro and small commercial vehicles have a good future if they're turned into EVs, as they're generally used with cities.

Does Daimler bringing the Fuso brand to India for electric trucks mean that it’s the end of the road for the Bharat Benz brand once the transition to electric vehicles is complete?

While this wont so anything for long haul transporters, this would be a good vehicle for vendors and part suppliers who supply to Just-in-Time manufacturing plants and Automobile plants who needs to do roundtrips between their and the clients plants, many of which are withing 30-40km or even closer. They can also be regularly topped-up while loading and unloading.

Re: Daimler plans to launch India's first electric truck

What would be the approximate price point at which this might be launched? As most lcvs with 3 ton payloads are priced around 10 lacs, an electric truck of similar payload under 15 lakhs will be interesting. But 100 km range is surprising. Let us wait and watch how transition to electric unfolds in India.
