I hope and pray that all members are safe from Corona. Today I was going through Team-BHP as I do once a day, and I found out this very interesting thread - vehicles used by the defence forces. And then I saw a photograph and I couldn't believe my eyes, it is my father in the picture.

He was awarded SM by the great Manikshaw after the 1971 war. I have seen the original photo somewhere, it's been very long:

Paramilitary forces which would include the BSF, CRPF, ITBP etc etc

@mods please kindly change the title maybe to "Indian Defence Forces" instead of "Indian Army". The Army works in a very different way (and is a very different organization) compared to Central Forces like ITBP, BSF, etc. With all due respect to all forces mentioned, request all members to not use these terms interchangeably.

Re: Cars & 4x4s of the Indian Defence Forces

The veritable Shaktiman seems to be missing.
There are stories of fire being lit under the vehicles in high altitudes to defreeze the lubes and get the machine running in the morning..and even not sw.off during stops because they wouldn't start again, long before heating coils and self adjusting start cycles..

Just speculative thoughts born of Idle curiosity.

The Armed forces had taken special dispensation for continuing to use the Gypsy. It is even now, very well suited compared to other similar vehicles in terms of cargo tub size and soft top etc for rapid deployment of troops and their arms.
The erstwhile Mahindra Invader too could easily do this type of duty. They could plonk the MStallion engine into it and offer it.
They could do something similar by using the Scorpio Getaway and putting a soft top onto the cargo tub and bolting on some side facing bench seats. The Getaway because of its strength and separate truck bed may be able to also perform duty as a light mounted artillery vehicle. (They used those old Willys Jeeps and Ford Jeeps in this way and mounted light artillery inside them.)
The Jimny being born as a hard top will not easily be adaptable to a soft top design unless they re design the body shell. It doesnt look like it will be a simple chop job.
The choice of Scorpio Classic is quite sensible because that is a hugely capable vehicle.
The new Force Gurkha could also be considered - but they will need to make a soft top version with side facing bench seats.

Just to add.
Cars & 4x4s of the Indian Defence Forces-mahindrarakshakphoto.jpg
The initial version of Mahindra Rakshak is a bullet-proof vehicle based on the Mahindra Commander. It is powered by a 2.5 litre diesel engine that puts out 75 bhp of power. It also has a manual shift four-wheel drive system and an optional AC. The Rakshak could withstand AK-47 rifle fire and also protection from grenades. Mahindra also offered the option of run-flat tyres.

Just adding some information which people might find useful

Quote:
Nissan Patrol Jonga 4X4
The Jonga was built by Nissan exclusively for the Indian Army. The name is an acronym for Jabalpur Ordnance and Guncarriage Assembly. The Jonga was in service from 1969 to 1999.
The JONGA used the same petrol engine as the Nissan One Ton and a three speed gear box. Carefree about fuel efficiency, it was a beast with abundant power on tap.

Quote:
Nissan 1 ton
The Nissan 4W73, aka 1 Ton, was used by the Indian military. It is said to have been based on the Dodge M37 Weapons Carrier.
This vehicle also had a diesel engines version commonly called One Ton KCL. The acronym having been derived from Kirloskar Cummins Limited from whom the diesel heart was sourced.

3 ton Shaktiman

I was actually quite surprised not to see the mention of The Shaktiman while discussing army vehicles. This vehicle, which was actually a MAN 415 (built under licence), was the most widely used medium-capacity truck of the Indian Armed Forces between the production years 1959 to 1996. It was built by the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, (VFJ) of the Indian Ordnance Factories Board. Though the vehicle is phased out of the Armed Forces and replaced by modern alternatives, one can still see many auctioned 3 tonners silently doing their duty in civil arena..
