In the last month, I had been to a remote village in the interiors of Kranatka and saw 100s of Force Toofan and no Tavera, Qualis or Sumo. While I started talking to the drivers, I was shoked to know the following creteria that a vehicle must meet to be purchased:

1. If the vehicle is a 12 to 15 seater, it must be capable of running even with about 25 people pushed into it.

2. Almost 90% of vehicles have atleast 2 people sitting on the top

3. The area has a little up-hill and down-hill travelling and the vehicle must pull this load without much issues

4. Repair must be simple, quick and cheap. Nobody is willing to leave the vehicles in the garage for days

5. The body should eventually rust out (it rains regularly) but not dent, or break

Keeping such requirements in mind, I am not sure how will this Magic create magic or winger won't be shown a 'finger'? Well, we will know in due course of time...

Could somebody please explain exactly what is the positioning of the Magic?

If it's pitted against the Minidors and Vikrams, then it is too expensive. If it's pitted against the Omni, then it doesn't have matching features like all-steel body and independent front suspension.

Or am I missing something here?

Yes I know Magic is diesel powered.

Dunno about the production version, but the ground clearance of the test vehicle of Winger is soo low near the rear bumper, that it would literally need to grow "wings" to prevent scraping the ground, in inclines, extra large humps etc.

But I guess its fully loaded, because I could see black cans (water filled?) inside.

I think Tata should restrict the Magic to rural/semi urban markets....it's way too rudimentary for urban markets

Just saw a Tata Magic on my way to work.

The real plus point seemed to be the performance which I was really doubtful until I saw it. It was doing really decent speeds and that too with 4 passengers including the driver. He could easily drive with the other cars doing 50kmph.
I think OMNI fleet has some serious competition. Already the ACE pickups are doing really well.

I would say that the high roof one is ideal for ambulance.

I think the Magic will be much safer than the 3 wheeled Bajaj Autos. All auto drivers carrying more than 3 people need to be fined/arrested on the spot. I have seen way too many autos toppling as a result of carrying way too many people or cargo.

wow -tata's entering another market segment - with the ACE they managed to pull a trump card - i think this is going to be another of those. The Mahindra voyager came out a while back - a CKD of a mitsubishi - it bombed. I hope tata's got its service in place. It looks ideal for delivery -esp white goods- going where the 407 cant go and taking a load that the auto cannot take.

ACtually coming to think of its - this is going to hit Tempo traveller BIG time. Not as large - but a configuration. Its going to be come the taxi operators fav instead of the travera / innova.
