Guys, I forgot to tell you I test drove one last week, the standard model which is only 68 bhp, the ride was good, I could easily maneuver it in the city trafiic, the steering felt light, despite having only 165 mm ground clearance took the pot holes comfortably, the suspension felt right, its just that the plastic quality was horrible and they have just thrown in too many seats, frankly the vehicle didnt fell that bad. I am waiting to TD the 90 bhp luxury model, will let you know once I do that.

Here is a 1990 Renault Trafic Fourgon.
It is 17 years old and has 2,34,000 km on it.

Compare the airvent on the nose left of the centreline

and the rear double door handles.

And this is from the Tata Winger advertisement.

Im sure everyone is aware that the Tata Winger is nothing but the Renault Trafic body(that the Tata bought off cheap) with the Sumo engine.

So Ram, what is Ur point with the pictorial comparison??

Tata magic

I didnt find another thread with this topic. Last week on my drive back home, I noticed a tata vehicle that was not an ACE and had me wondering what it really was then. the badging said MAGIC but it looked so similar to ACE. I am attaching a few more photos and the official brochure of this vehicle. Sounds like a formidable comptetition to the OMNI from maruti, but perhaps more spacious too. Wonder what is the pricing of this vechicle. That aside, no matter what we give our people, they will still load this vehicle with three times the number of school children

Brochure: http://magic-tatamotors.com/ace-web/ace_brochure.pdf

Magic is the passenger version of Ace.

It offers the diesel advantage. Too bad, it doesn't come with an all metal body yet. That's where Omni scores!

Food for thought:

Imagine that Maruti-Suzuki were to make a Tata Sumo equivalent -- a big and basic station wagon.

Imagine that this Maruti-Suzuki Sumo was made to Suzuki standards of
build & weld quality, paint quality, smoothness of engine and power train, reliability and after sales service.

Would we still think that the Tata Sumo was a serious competitor to the Maruti Sumo?

make or design? One of the reasons why Tata vehicles cost less is the fact the R&D is done locally right here in India. Maruti-Suzuki hasn't designed a single automobile in India in 25 years of its existence whereas Tata has been doing it for decades.

Heck, as of now Maruti-Suzuki doesn't even have a R&D centre. It's planned but is still to come up!

If you meant only "make", then, the relevant question is: make at what cost? How much would Maruti Sumo be priced at? What would the F.E. be like?

Since when did Suzuki develop a reputation for build quality?
In so far as (1) build & weld quality, and (2) paint quality are concerned, Tata standards are second to none. Aren't Mercedes cars painted in Tata paint shop? Indica-Cityrover received bad reviews in UK but most reviewers and owners were full of praise for the car's paint quality.

It could well be. The evolution of Tata Sumo hasn't stopped, has it? There've been countless improvements made in 14 years of the vehicle's existence. Remember, the Sumo Grande is also a Tata Sumo!

The crucial question of course is pricing and F.E., the latter even more so. Even Toyota Qualis managed to dislodge Sumo from the No.1 position in UV segment because of better F.E. and hence better economics for the operators.

Incidentally, Tata is already working on Sumo's successor.
And to the best of my knowledge, Maruti-Suzuki has no plans to design or make a Sumo!

+1 to that. Bring back Gypsy wholeheartedly, Maruti albeit with a diesel engine & little sprucing up of the interiors and ICE

Wrong. The Sumo & the Sumo Grande are not the same. Apart from the body style, I dont see any part of the Sumo being taken fwd to the Grande - not the body, not the WB, not the chassis, not the engine, not the seats, not the wheels /tyre sizes .. nothing.

Nothing Except the four letters that say "SUMO".
