Tesla Semi electric truck enters production; Pepsi to become the first customer

Elon Musk has announced the start of production of the Tesla Semi.

Tesla's all-electric truck was first unveiled back in 2017 and wasn't expected to go into production until 2023. However, Musk has now announced the truck has entered production, with deliveries of the same slated to begin by year-end. He also confirmed that Pepsi will receive the first Tesla Semi on December 1, 2022.

The Tesla Semi is being produced in Nevada, close to the company's Gigafactory. Reports state that the company initially had a capacity to produce 5 electric trucks per week. However, Tesla will be increasing the volume in the near future. While the complete details of the production version of the electric truck are still scarce, Musk has confirmed that it will offer 500 miles (805 km) of range on a single charge.

PepsiCo is said to have ordered 100 Tesla Semi electric trucks to be added to its fleet - one of the biggest orders at the time of its launch in 2017.

The biggest query I have is - What's the payload this truck can haul for 805 km of range?

Somewhere I read that it would be comparable to a class 8 diesel truck in terms of payload and would do 500 miles (805KM) on a single charge with 'full' payload. No official details yet.

Tesla's Cybertruck to start mass production at end of 2023.

Quote:
Tesla aims to start mass production of its Cybertruck at the end of 2023, two years after the initial target for the long-awaited pickup truck Chief Executive Elon Musk unveiled in 2019
Quote:
A gradual ramp in the second half of next year to full output for the sharp-angled electric truck would mean that Tesla would not be recording revenue until early 2024 for a full-quarter of production on a new model expected as key to its growth.

It would also mean a wait of another year for the estimated hundreds of thousands of potential buyers who have paid $100 to reserve a Cybertruck in one of the most highly anticipated and closely tracked electric vehicle launches ever.
It has not announced final pricing on the Cybertruck, showed the production version of the vehicle or specified how it will manage the battery supply for the new model.

Tesla delivers first electric Semi trucks — three years late, without update on output, pricing.

The electric long-hauler was first announced in 2017, and was supposed to go into production in 2019, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and a global parts shortage.

Standing on a stage flanked by four Tesla Semis, two of which wrapped in Pepsi and Frito Lay logos, Musk spoke about the need to reduce the amount of carbon emissions produced by the shipment of goods across the planet. But after paying lip service to the mission of fighting climate change, he quickly pivoted to his distinct brand of showmanship.

The truck will feature a new 1,000-volt powertrain architecture that Musk said will factor into future product development at Tesla. The Semi has traction control to prevent jackknifing, regenerative braking for increased battery efficiency, and an automatic clutch for seamless highway driving.

Musk addressed charging during the event, revealing that Tesla has developed a new liquid-cooled charging connector capable of delivering 1 megawatt of direct current power. “It’s going to be used for Cybertruck, too,

Re: Tesla Semi electric truck enters production; Pepsi to become the first customer

Tesla Semi with Frito Lay livery spotted broken down on roadside.

Even though there was a Tesla service van on site, they had to call a tow truck.

Quote:
PepsiCo and its subsidiary Frito Lay are now operating a fleet of 36 Tesla Semi trucks after deliveries began in December of last year. As a result, Tesla Semi sightings in traffic have gone up, including one showing one of these fully electric trucks seemingly broken down on the side of the road in Modesto, California.

This Semi had the Frito Lay livery and was towing a trailer when it happened. There is also what appears to be a Tesla service van parked in front of the truck, and this does evidently suggest the truck had a problem and technicians were called in to help.
Breakdowns like these are to be expected, though, and they will keep occurring until bugs are ironed out. Tesla is no stranger to letting paying customers also be its Beta testers – just look at Full Self-Driving – so it’s not a stretch to imagine that it views PepsiCo in a similar light, although the latter accepted to be the first to operate these trucks knowing that there may be potential problems.
