I find Ola Auto to be more expensive than Uber Auto. Uber auto fare is approximately 10% to 15% more than the metered auto fare. I frequently visit a place around 11km from home. If I catch normal auto, the fare will be around 170 Rupees. Uber usually costs 190 to 200 Rupees. Ola Auto costs more than 200 Rupees
That said, I always prefer catching a normal auto whenever possible even if the autowallah asks for 20 bucks more on the final meter rate. I hate multiple cancellations on Ola/Uber and the need to wait for Auto after booking. Last time I waited 20 minutes after booking since my ride was cancelled twice and the booking rerouted to other drivers.
There are many factors contributing to price increases, such as the cost of fuel, traffic congestion, the cost of software maintenance, commissions, taxes, etc., Sadly, in India, consumer-friendly business models are not successful.
We are different from developed nations in this regard.
Ola charges 10-15% more than Uber, that's for sure. However I don't know when this ban will start, I used Uber auto today morning. Even Ola auto is working!

Ola, Uber or Rapido - none of them charge as per rule
The rule says:
- Rs. 30 for the first 2 km
- Rs. 15 for subsequent kilometers
- 1.5x times fare for 10 pm to 5 am
If you check Rapido, which always charge the lowest, even they exploit the first point. Instead of charging flat Rs.30 for the first 2 km, they charge Rs.30 per km for the first 2 km.
Ola and Uber on the other hand add some access fee of Rs. 20-40 - just loot
Instead of playing shitty politics, they should be regulating this.
And we, as people living in Bengaluru need to start voting so that we become their vote bank and they, though unwillingly, will have to listen to our demands.
Most of our policy makers and journalists have never tried to understand the model of Ola and Uber and tried to make it easy for hapless commuters. Surge pricing is supposed to match demand and supply and not merely to gouge customers. If they make it easy to get cab and three wheeler licenses, there will be many more public vehicles on the road, affordable prices and more employment. Journos dont get it, run around like a headless chicken for 1-2 odd episodes of high prices and Governments move swiftly banning the services. And we commuters are worse off now. No data to back up but have observed that fares are double of what they were around 9-12 months back, nearly impossible to get cabs in time. Hence more and more people find it cheaper and convenient to drive their now cars. This is added to the earlier fear of public transport during covid times. Sad approach to a good industry which could have been a winner; jobs, less traffic and pollution, less personal cars, saving for middle classes and if I may add, even better health given the less stress due to driving.
Have found Uber / OLa auto convenient for my mother when she has to go alone, since the route is fixed and price too. Uber being better priced of the two, it is mostly this over Ola. We do have a local auto guy who is dependable, but he wont be available all the time.
Let's see how it goes.
How is the ban going to fix anything with regards to high fare? I think a better regulation was needed instead of an outright ban. Now the regular auto guys will have even more leeway to charge whatever they want. Competition is always good. Better regulation over fare and surge pricing would have been a logical solution.
The intention of this ban seems to be something else all together - to please the auto driver's association for political benefit. I do not see this staying once the political goal is over. This is good for noone, neither the ola/uber drivers, not the consumer and in the long run not even for the standalone auto drivers.

So the fare must be 60rs for route 1 and 75rs for the alternate route. However when I checked in Ola it showed 96rs for route 1. There is no option to change route in Ola so I'm assuming it will be ~110-120rs for alternate route. |
But have autos (offline and not via apps) ever charged you by the meter? I have been quoted Rs. 500 and Rs. 600 for a distance of ~9km (from Marathahalli to Hoodi) whereas Ola/Uber showed the fare to be ~190.
I don't care if Ola/Uber aren't sticking to the fare guidelines. If it helps me from getting ripped off by the whims and fancies of an autowallah, I'll take that.
I truly admire how Mumbai has this thing under control. Wonder what works there well that doesn't anywhere else. And it isn't like their fares are expensive or the road situation is any better.

According to the additional commissioner for transport Hemantha Kumara, the move comes following complaints of auto drivers charging exorbitantly. He added that the transport department issued a notice to the companies to stop the services in the city.
Rapido has responded, stating that all their fares are in accordance with the fares decided upon by the state government. The company said that they were not charging any extra money.

I think this is just a bunch of private goons posing as customers and raising complaints to the government. I've always had good experience on Ola, Uber and Rapido. Real customers need to get together and bring down the false campaign.
Ridiculous move. The one thing we struggled with (TN, KA) was transparency in terms of fares. Especially, if you are an outsider, you are subject to the whims and fancies of the autowallahs. In TN, they used to quote ridiculous fares even to me, a localite.
The one thing that Ola/Uber/Rapido brought to the table was transparency - if you want to travel from A to B, you knew exactly how much you are signing up for. If there is a surge for whatever reasons, you are told that upfront. It is upto you to decide whether it is worth it, or not. That, for me, always beats a draining battle everytime with autowallahs to decide on a fare. For people who might not know the local language, it is going to get even worse.
The ones in power make no effort to hide populist decisions :Frustrati. Autowallahs form a huge vote bank in any city. Why was this decision not taken in the last 5 years? Were Ola and Uber strictly adhering to the mandated fares (which were lower) then? Clearly this is to please a very strong and influential vote bank for the upcoming state elections in Karnataka.
Autowallahs are now going to have a merry time with their daylight robbery in the name of fares. It's been a long time since I have actually taken a 3 wheeler. Have been strictly sticking to personal transportation post 2020 (however the traffic maybe) and pre booked cabs from known drivers for airport runs or the BMTC Vayu Vajras if I am travelling solo.
Certainly sounds like a populist vote bank motivated move. I am wondering who is ensuring that Auto guys ever stick to meter or any form of fixed rate.
I have been living in Bangalore for almost 2 decades, though limited in usage but never come across an auto guy who didnt haggle on fare. It gets even more pronounced for non-kannada speaking passenger. I will any day pay more on a transparent fare cab or auto than haggle with 6 auto guys before one of them agrees to take to my place of interest. Any day prefer volvo AC BMTC over an auto even if some walking is required.
In last one week, for 3.4KM trip I have paid Rs.107 and Rs.118 on Ubber. Both of them are at non peak hours and in daytime.
1.2Km metro station Ubber changes anywhere between Rs 78 to 98/-. Now when I flag down auto, driver asks to pay as much shown in ubber..
Better to Ban Ubber and Ola for Auto rides. I don;t mind 10-15%, but 3x-4x is day robbery.
I have an unpopular opinion, ola and uber have made the experience of intracity travel pleasant as opposed to previous times when citizens would pretty much be at the mercy of the auto driver especially during odd hours or outside public transport terminals and the auto drivers would do exactly what ola and uber are currently practising ,which is price gouging.
Bangalore auto drivers are notorious for this asking for 1.5 times the usual fare stating odd reasons like 'i have to return empty from that location ,etc' even when the location is less than 5-10 km away . Even with the higher fares I would still prefer ola or uber just out of spite and it's also much less of a hassle. When the auto drivers themselves where involved in practices such as price gouging ,all was well except the citizens suffering . Now that the same thing is being done by someone else and they don't stand to profit from it, they cry foul.
This also makes me wonder what businesses model does ola and uber have if the govt passed a legislation limiting margins of these transactions?
If only the local government bodies act with similar alacrity against the erring autowalla's who refuse to take rides using govt stipulated meters.
Honestly, I would've even pay attention to Uber and Ola Auto section, if the local auto goons would play by the rule book.
