Thanks for sharing, and have to say eventhough I am not a proper aviation enthusiast as such (just have my appreciation for the 747, B-52 and dislike for the narrow body cigar planes) your way of writing made me read it through.

Wonderful article. Reminded me of my days flying helicopters which is a bit different from flying a fixed wing technically but experience wise for both its surreal which has been aptly written by none other than Da Vinci, to quote him "Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return".

Did younger your helicopter pilot license? Whereabouts did you fly?

I have taken some helicopter lessons myself in the early 80s. We lived in Brighton UK, and there was a fairly well helicopter and fixed wing airport at Shoreham. Its a very long time ago, can't quit remember why I did not push through and got my license at the time. I seem to recall I was called away from what was supposed to be a fourth month leave from the merchant navy, but was cut short after week 2. Took decades, but I did manage to get my PPL and IFR whilst living in the USA.

In my offshore years I have flown on many helicopters, always as a passenger, but often I the left seat, next to the pilot. Things were pretty relaxed in those days and most pilots are happy to have somebody next to them who is genuinely interested.

I have written several threads on various helicopter museums around Europe. I am still fascinated by them!
