Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

I tried to search the entire forum for Trams. I didn't find many details except some threads on Trams in Kolkata and a mention of the launch of a trackless Tram. That's It ! . It was surprising because we covered almost all the transport modes in various threads. However, didn't find many details, Pics, or Videos of the Tram on our forum.

I find Trams an interesting mode of city travel. Let's have a dedicated thread on Trams around the world.

Let’s celebrate trams around the world!

Share pictures of trams from your city or travels in the thread below.
Let’s see how different cities from different countries carry their history on rails.

Trams are more than just a mode of transport—they’re moving symbols of history, culture, and charm in cities across the globe. From the charming yellow trams of Lisbon to the sleek light rail systems of Melbourne and Zurich, trams blend heritage, sustainability, and city life beautifully.

One of the most iconic examples is Lisbon,

I recently had the chance to visit Lisbon and travel extensively on its historic trams. The famous Tram 28 winds through the city's narrow, hilly streets, offering stunning views of old neighborhoods like Alfama and Graça. Lisbon’s tram network dates back to the early 1900s, with some of the vintage “Remodelado” trams still in operation, preserved to retain their old-world charm while serving daily commuters and tourists alike.

Lisbon’s tram system, known locally as “eléctrico,” began operating in 1901, replacing horse-drawn carriages. These electric trams were designed to tackle the city's steep hills and narrow, winding streets. Over time, they became an inseparable part of Lisbon’s identity, especially the classic Remodelado trams, which still operate today. Despite being over half a century old, these beautifully preserved yellow trams continue to climb Lisbon’s slopes with a nostalgic charm that feels like time travel.

Here are some of the pics and Videos.

Tram 28 is one of Lisbon’s most iconic experiences—a charming yellow tram that winds its way through the city's most historic and picturesque neighborhoods. Dating back to the 1930s, this vintage “Remodelado” tram climbs steep hills, navigates tight corners, and offers a front-row seat to landmarks in Alfama, Graça, Baixa, and Estrela.

Whether you're a tourist or a local, a ride on Tram 28 feels like stepping back in time. The creaky wooden interiors, stunning views, and the rhythm of the city outside the window make it one of the most beautiful and nostalgic journeys you can take in Lisbon.

Step inside Tram 28 and you’re instantly transported to another era. The interiors are beautifully vintage, with polished wooden panels, brass fittings, and large windows that frame Lisbon’s scenic streets. The seating is arranged in a single row on each side with narrow aisles—cozy and intimate, perfect for the tram’s tight turns and steep climbs. Despite the compact space, the old-world charm and character make every ride a memorable one.

Lisbon’s trams are built to conquer the city's steep slopes with ease. Their powerful motors and compact design allow them to climb sharp inclines and navigate tight curves, making every uphill ride a thrilling and scenic journey through the heart of the city.

Looking forward to seeing more trams from around the world!

Let’s create a global collection of Tram moments together

Re: Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

Thank you for opening this new thread on the one and only mode of mechanized transport missing from Team BHP.

Rolling resistance of steel on steel ie a tram on steel rails is less than 1/10th of the resistance of a rubber tyre on asphalt road. One deterrent to setting up a tram network today is the maze of unaesthetic power cables and supporting cables that need to be set up and hung from a height. With the advent on modern EV batteries it should be possible to build a tram car set that carries say 50 passengers and runs 400 kms a day between recharge sessions. Who knows with technology trams might make a comeback to augment heavy bus routes and to act as last mile feeders for the metro system.

Re: Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

I LOVE trams. First time I traveled on a tram was in Calcutta when I was a child and I instantly fell in LOVE with these cute vehicles. Since then whichever city I have visited and has a tram network, I make sure to commute as much as I can on them.

Trams offer a compelling case for being an efficient and sustainable mode of transportation, especially in urban areas. Their ability to carry a large number of passengers, operate on dedicated tracks, and utilize electric power makes them a strong alternative to both buses and cars.

Here are pics from my recent visit to Hong Kong. Hong Kong Trams are affectionately called the "Ding Ding" due to the bell sound they make when they start and stop.

Note - Some pics are edited in Lightroom for Instagram posts.

Re: Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

What a wonderful thread idea. I was in Lisbon recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the old city walking and taking the tram when the legs gave up.

Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos-lisbon.jpg

Apart from that, i work for a Dutch company and am frequently in Netherlands visiting mainly Delft, Rotterdam and Hague. The tram ride from Hague to Delft is wonderful and passes through some lovely locations. Although slower than the train, the views more than make up for it. Similarly, have found trams in Amsterdam and Rotterdam to be very comfortable to get around. But my absolute favorite remains the Calcutta tram purely for nostalgic reasons! Never bothering clicking any pics but this surely brings a rush of memories. Thank you once again.

Re: Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

I have just been to two of them one in Kolkata and one in Sydney. Last time I was there in Kolkata was in 2002 if I am not wrong, I do not have digital copies of the photos I took then.

Next was back in 2017 from Sydney. The traveller in me then did a terrible mistake of not capturing a good photo of the tram.

Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos-img_3502.jpg
Travelling around the city with my elder one (who was 1 year then). Not sure in which part of Sydney this station is - it says Market City.

Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos-img_3499.jpg
This is the only pic I have, I do have a video btw. I clicked this with my toddler on the shoulder. This should be the central station which is connect to the metro and the intercity rail line. So, the metro stops right in front.

Bhpians who are more familiar with the place can correct me.

Re: Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

I've always been a fan of trams and choose to take them quite often in Germany over buses/trains. Yet somehow, I've never bothered to capture a single good photo of them!

Wow, seeing the love of trams, I think it is important that you guys staying in Germany get to witness the Tram competitions. You can get more details here.
I came to know about this from a YouTube channel called The Tim Traveller.

Also, I loved the trams in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Re: Trams Around the World : Pics & Videos

The original NON- POLLUTING mode of transport. Living in Calcutta and having seen the decline of the Trams, it saddens me no end. Trams bring character to a city and while cities all over the world are taking care to re invent the Tram services, our authorities have practically killed this wonderful mode of transport.

A little more effort and imagination would have preserved this heritage mode of transport. Trams still ply on certain routes here in Calcutta and I hope those stay at least. Albeit considered slow by today’s standard, I have seen trams pick up considerable speed on dedicated lines. It’s a pity that the only Indian city in the Tram map of the world will soon lose itself to the vagaries of the modern necessities while every other city is preserving the same in much organised manner !!

Thank you for the thread, I will try to add some pictures going forward.

Yes, battery operated Trams have started appearing at least in the Middle-East countries . Used the Education City Tram during the FIFA world cup. They do not have power lines, instead they have pantographs to charge batteries at train stops.

Here is a small video showing their operation. Video credit to respective owner.

However, the lines were not very convenient . Jeremey Clarkson quote can sum-up this tram line "They run nowhere close to anywhere you want to be!".

There are some battery operated trams already. But it can be a bit of a challenge. Look at the trams shown for the Netherlands.

They weigh, with passenger between 50-75 tonnes. That's for 200-250 people. They have on average 8 electrical motors with a combined max output of 500 HP. Trams have a maximum speed of 70 km/h. The average Dutch tram does about 230 km a day.

Powering that with batteries is possible, but it does take some specialised equipment. As far as I know, battery operated trams are still relatively rare. I have seen some hybrid trams. So trams that have batteries in board for certain section of the track where there are no overhead track.

We do have quite some battery operated busses. Even, the very large articulate busses run on batteries. They weigh a lot less compared to trams.

https://www.ebusco.com/electric-buses/ebusco-2-2/

You would think it should be possible to convert the overhead track to charging points as well.

Anorak fact: we still have a town that runs trolley busses; Arnhem

This tram model and the colour scheme is from the USSR. Even older models were smaller (single coach) and had rounded fronts and backs.
