The premium end of India's commercial vehicle sector is set to see a Japanese giant stepping into the trucking ring. With Volvo, Tatra, MAN-Force, and Mercedes-Benz present in the league of heavies along with AMW, Tata Daewoo and Ashok Leyland, joining their tribe will be Hino Motors.
Japanese commercial vehicle major Hino will be trucking on Indian roads from April with the launch of its 500 Series. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor, Hino has identified the Bric-band as a growth area and this foray into India will be initiated by a JV with Japanese trading firm Marubeni Corporation. Hino will hold a majority 65% stake in the company with Marubeni having the rest.
Speaking to TOI, Hiroshi Nakamura, MD, Hino Motors Sales India, said his company had identified the Indian trucking sector as a priority market and Hino vehicles were ready to play their role in the country's development. The company will be based in Mumbai and will commence commercial operations in April 2009. The plan calls for a whole range of trucks (heavy, medium and light) and coaches to be sold in India and while there is no possibility of a manufacturing plant in the first phase, a local assembly unit doing the business using CKD kits shipped in from abroad could be on cards in a couple of years.
The first Hino products would be two rigids from its very successful 500 Series. One would be a 6x4 unit, earmarked specifically for the off-road open mining sector while the second one would be a 6x2 truck with regular on-road cargo application in mind. Both would be imported from Hino's Thailand plant.
