Even as a personal, family touring vehicle, I'd say it hard to beat! :) You can actually WALK in there!
Hi-roof Tata Winger - unbeatable as an ambulance IMHO with its low floor (for easy access) and high ceiling. Good turbo-charged engine that will take the patient to the hospital pretty fast, too.
A Dodge Sprinter (or the Indian version of it) with a supercharged Corvette V8 engine powering it.:)
Swaraj Mazda any day !! check this out !!
oops sorry forgot to paste the link
swaraz mazda
Here are my thoughts,
1) Force Traveller
2) Swarj Mazda
3) Tata Swinger
Best ambulance I've see : a Hinduja Hospital Tempo / Force Traveller. Big on space (including the all too important height), lotsa room for an army of doctors & medical equipment, decent engine & road manners, plus the road presence to scare away others (very important IMHO).

But it looks to Big though I am not supporting our most Unsafe Vehicle to carry a patient in emergency (OMNI). Think about our Road too. Many place this big vehicle may not able to penetrate.
tata winger or tempo traveller would be ideal. these vehicles would look smart too.
more than selecting the vehicle, i feel there should be a certain criteria for an ambulance:
1) big on space, you cannot request the victim to adjust. it should also have space for all the medical equipment & doctors
2) comfortable suspension, most often the jerks in our ambulances kill the victim.
3) good pick up, the reach the hospital faster
4) if possible, air conditioning
5) finally, the ambulance should be safe itself. no maruti omnis please.
that said, i feel tata, force & mahindra should make specific, made-to-order vehicles meeting all the above requirements & only these vehicles should be allowed to be used by hospitals as ambulances.

I agree that penetrating through the traffic would be a big problem !! but once I was a volunteer for a big meet. During that time the internal stadium roads were kind of blocked to divert the pedestrian traffic, on summoning the ambulance for an emergency the Mazda driver drove offroad (before we could remove the rope obstacles) running over a layer of bricks bordering the road. I guess no small vehicles would be able to do that.
I would wish the people to be more considerate and give way to an ambulance!!
maybe a stripped down version of the Xylo could serve as a good ambulance!!
Tata Winger for Mid and small city.
How about a Maruti Eeco ?? I feel, it is the best option for a hospital with a limited budget (which does not want a box on wheels like an Omni).
