Re: The Indian Armed Forces...Army/Navy/Airforce Vehicle Thread

Tata Motors says Indian security forces to soon use Safari, Xenon : TATA

Border Security Force (BSF) is taking around 500 Tata Xenon SUVs for border patrolling, replacing the Maruti Gypsies used so far.

The Indian Army is meanwhile taking around 3,192 Tata Safari Storme UAVs, which won over Mahindra Scorpio and they are expecting around 35,000 vehicles to be ordered in future.

What a fantastic image! Really intriguing to see the cars of the 3 Chiefs of Staff. Wonder if they happen to be armoured vehicles. The IN Chief's Safari seems to me to have the sort of bulbous window edges I expect from ballistics glass. On the other end of the scale the SX4 of the Air Marshall doesn't seem to be beefed up in any way (could be ingrained air force thinking - light weight light weight light weight!). Also love the fact that the SX4 is in a very IAF blue. Almost expected the Navy to have gone with a stark white Safari.

Re: The Indian Armed Forces...Army/Navy/Airforce Vehicle Thread

Guys, any idea on these vehicles? At a signal, the "left hand drive" sign in Hindi script got my attention. The AirForce roundrel is present, however, the paint scheme looks army-ish?

Also, it was a convoy of 3 6x6 trucks lead by a Silver Xenon. The people inside were wearing army overalls and were keeping an eye on those trucks, at times even going slowly to stay together.

The last truck (first in my pics) has some sort of a canon/ turret? which starts from the load area and ends up over the bonnet. Pretty neat to see such vehicles on the road.

Any clues on their vintage?

Re: The Indian Armed Forces...Army/Navy/Airforce Vehicle Thread

To best of my knowledge these are ZIL make trucks from the Soviet era. The Indian Air Force uses a lot of them as does the Army. They are 6x6. The protruding device is hard to tell from this angle but is most likely a device connected with either repair or loading of missiles or some other IAF equipment. It could also be some kind of launcher. The ZIL trucks were configured into dozens of different roles. My know-how is limited but this is a best guess. One interesting feature they had was to be able to vary tyre pressure to suit the ground the vehicle was driving on.

I remember seeing a video of some air exercise few years back. These vehicles had SAM's mounted on the cargo area and were firing a salvo. May be the SAM launcher was what blackwasp noticed.

Edit: As per my understanding, for military vehicles the first two numerical's after the 'Up arrow' of registration number is the year of commissioning. As per that, this vehicle is of 1983 vintage from the pics.

Its very much done I guess. Saw a new Xenon at BSF outpost near Vigakot, photography is not allowed there. Hence don't have that pic.

However, here is pic of another Xenon at Kutch festival area. This was on pick up duty for an officer who had come to visit the festival.

Pic link from my travelogue

I was wondering if and when it would be retired and scraped by the army, would it be considered road legal if bought via auction and restored by a civilian for personal use

Mr Narayan, would you have some pictures of these ground vehicles we have been using, I am sure there are many Russian and British vehicles we had used - and of course we started making them on our own along with other domestic manufacturers like Tata and Mahindra.
