The engine is available as 340 bhp and as 380 bhp.

Engine = D9B.
Bore = 120mm.
Stroke = 138mm.
Output = 340 bhp @ 1900 rpm / 380 bhp @ 1900 rpm.
Torque = 1632 Nm @ 1200 rpm / 1740 Nm @ 1200 rpm.

The spec sheet I could catch in English.

Volvo B9R: Cost: 85l, Seats: 53

So leaving aside the Merc, the B9R costs 13.33% more but has a revenue generating (seats) capacity of 17.18% more! And I bet it would be more efficient too (litres per passenger per km)!

All you would need is good, straight roads that can make use of the long wheelbase. And GQ is almost ready in most places.

Makes good sense for the operator, and they may be able to charge a slight premium over B7R!
Why should they charge a premium? They should charge less.
For a Rs. 75 lakh 45-seater, if the ticket price is Rs. 200 from Chembur to Aundh, then for a Rs. 85 lakh 53-seater, the ticket price should be 3.8% less that is: Rs. 192.45 from Chembur to Aundh.

The passenger is paying for kilometers covered, speed of transportation and exclusivity of access. Exclusivity is reduced if there is too much janata.

On the other hand, it makes sense to have two classes: economy class and business class with more leg space, shoulder space, 220V power supply for laptop, etc. I have more ideas -- how about
  • web-based reservations,
  • e-ticketing,
  • address-to-address limousine pickup/drop off, ...

saw the new 9400 with VOLVO OCEAN RACE decals in Blore yesterday on Airport Road
Externally, not much of difference, at least to me. (had a hard time overtaking the bus from left between WIndTunnel Road and Manipal Signals)

Cheers

I saw B9R today. The stickers read, "Sharma Travels". Yes, It had the extra set of wheels...
I was heading to work through Sarjapur Road and as I crossed Mantri Sarovar towards the left - I saw 2 huge B9R's. Usually, in this place, it's a convoy of vehicles parked for RTO clearance.

Cheers,
Jai

How about some responsible drivers too! I'm seeing far too many Volvos involved in accidents.

And with this kind of power (and price) they must also be providing safety features - not sure if any of our bus operators will pay extra for safety anyway.

You have a point! I thought that something new and unique attracts attention for sometime and an operator can cash in on that fact!

Nice Ideas! Actually Paolo has a 2 class configuration on its Volvos (atleast it did some 3 years ago). They had Sleeper and Seating classes on the Bangalore-Goa route. It was looking like an aftermarket realignment and was badly done. The sleepers couldn't sit while the seaters couldn't sleep

They had made the sleeper beds over the seats and there was hardly any head room for those sitting. I can tell you it was horribly claustrophobic!

Actually what they can include is a toilet! Makes a lot of sense, reduces stoppage times and frequency and also more convenient for ladies (and men with some shame) as compared to random highway stops! But then again, we Indians must learn to take some personal responsibility with public property and keep it clean. Maybe that's the reason there was such a BIG traffic jam on Sarjapur/Outer Ring Road (as I heard)!
