Now a days in Mumbai, there are various vehicles doing the metered taxi duties, i mean the black and yellow top and the blue cool cab ones. Until recent. I have seen

The everstaying Padmini, Primer 118NE, AMbassador, Hyundai Santro, Santro Xing, Wagon R, Zen (Not the Estilo), Palio for Cool cabs, Siena, Indica But the most recent and noticable ones for me were

Ford Ikon, Swift HB, both in cool cab versions. and also some Maruti 1000 and Esteems.

So its more or less good variety these days on our roads.

I noticed a Swift ZXi with a yellow board, here in Bangalore. I was really surprised. Why a ZXi of all?!

Voted for Others.
Indica was successful at the taxi market mainly because of its diesel heart and space also we can add relatively low maintainence.
No other car can match that.

1) Swift DDiS :
Positive points.
Excellent engine.
Excellent A.S & S.
Good driver's car that is of no use here.
Peace of mind for both traveller and owner.

Negative points.
Rear seat is not good and also the view from rear window is not good. Passengers wont like it.

2) Getz CRDI:
Positive points.
Space.
Powerful engine.

Negative points.
Expensive to buy.
Relatively expensive to maintain.

3) Wagon R CNG/LPG:
Positive points.
More comfortable rear seat mainly because of good ride quality ( as compared to Santro ).
Good boot space.
All Maruti factors namely A.S & S., peace of mind for owner, low on maintainence.

Negative points.
Availability of fuel like CNG and LPG.

4) Santro CNG/LPG.
Positive Points.
Good as a city car.

Negative points.
Relatively expensive to maintain.
Availability of fuel like CNG and LPG.

5) OTHERS.

I have voted for this option.
There are more than one contender. Posting as per my preference.

a) Mahindra Renault Logan.
This car is the one that fits the bill perfectly. In either format, petrol or diesel, this car is the one to do this job. Great rear seat. Great ride quality, will be cheap to run in diesel and for petrol it will be CNG/LPG.
Availability of fuel will be an issue for CNG/LPG, but the 1.4 motor will be sufficiently economical to run on petrol for some period of time. Basically the rear seat, ride quality and added boot makes it ideal for this job.

b) Indigo CS diesel.
We know all the positive and negative features of this car. It loses to logan because of rear seat, ride quality and boot space.

c) Indica diesel Vista.
Well this car builds upon the Indica and there wont be sagging of rear end now thanks to non independent rear suspension. Now with better motor.

d) Palio MJD.
This is as good as the Indica ( yes Indica and not Indica Vista ) with Fiat diesel.

I think interior space & the boot capacity are the two major factors which are essentialy sought when we talk about Taxis in India. IN view of this, nothing can beat a Logan diesel. Looks like it is tailor made for taxi purpose only.

Indigo XL

I guess Indigo XL is the one for Airport Taxi.

With leather Seats, DVD Entertainment, Dedicated A/C vent with control for the rear passenger.

Other features i want in the Taxis.
It should have Music Head Unit at rear, so that Passenger can play his CD / DVD /USB and enjoy his travel.

Mobile Charger, Power Adapter, Internet, Phone with ISD facility (Yes, with a biller), Ice vending machine, Chiller box, etc...

i'll vote for the Palio MJD or the Vista Quadra for the rear seat comfort and space that you really would need in a taxi. THe getz crdi is ruled out coz of the high price.
