Wow even the Army sumo looks cool. Never liked the sumo but this particular sumo makes me think twice.

+1 to what Parm said, there is no technical/mechanical difference between a defence Gypsy and the one you can buy at a Maruti showroom other than the black out lights and the color.

The reason people are passionate about them is because it gives a high to know that you own an ex-army vehicle and because they can be restored and made usable after being auctioned by the army for a cost efficient price.

Wow, Harjeev has already become a Maruti fan.

Trust me bud, had the Gypsy been a diesel, I would have been the first in queue to buy it. It tugs at your heart strings like no other but is expensive to run, which makes poor souls like me stay away from it as an everyday vehicle.

lol!!! A typical Army story, i spent major part of my life in different battalions as my dad was a service man. I even heard that it can run on "Dalda" (Vanaspathi) how about that? But i don't think all these are true.

Thanks

A clarification - what you see there is the Scorpio Refresh body with a 2.6 CRDe engine. Even the new M2Di's come with the same style of bumper now. The mHawk is just the 2.2L engine.

These were multifuel vehicles. More info here: Multifuel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This is as opposed to flexible fuel vehicles (FFV), which are so popular in Brazil, that our Scorpios don't have any takers there (M&M is exporting to Brazil too!) - diesels in Brazil account for just 10% of the total car sales.

Running on Dalda is of course a major exaggeration (would love to see how they got the congealed stuff to flow - or did someone sit under the tank with a stove? ), but it is a fact that it could run on a mix of petrol/diesel and mustard oil too!

Most Diesel engines (at least the older ones, not sure about modern CRDi engines etc.) can be run on vegetable oil with only minor modifications right?

Diesel engine can easily be run on kerosene, my cousin owns two trucks, AL and eicher. He told me they regularly run on mixture of diesel and kerosene. He also said they have to replace fuel pump every year. But cost it is nothing compared to money saved by kerosene-diesel mixture.
I don't know effects of this on engine though. (He didn't mention that)
