Wow, TATA has developed fast reflexes. Here is the response to Mahindra Gio.

Those eyes... are they penguin or Eagle?

The pics seems to be photoshopped a little.

The picture seems to be photoshopped and I doubt the reliability of image. Look at the door near the front wheel. Have a look at the fuel filler cap. These parts look as if they are photoshopped. Similar looking headlights appeared in some vehicle, or an auto turned 4 wheeler one ton vehicle.

This IS REALLY the much talked about penguin small pickup truck which I had highlighted in march this year on the CV thread. I did get an opportunity to see this truck at TSS, Delhi CV outlet for testing, but did not took a pic as it was under tight security.
Its based on a smaller version of ACE platform, but its launch got delayed by one year due to reliability testing. Its 0.5 ton pickup and of course, the segment of mahindra geo, but also a 4 wheeled alternative to bajaj GC, vikram etc.

The pic is real. Anyway, it looks much better than that cartoonish mahindra geo.

One question, Tata already has the ACE, then why this?

@tsk

This is a 4 wheeler 500 kg load carrier - a segment where the Piaggio Ape 3 wheeler is selling 20,000 diesel powered vehicles per month.

Given the stability and 'car like' cabin of a 4 wheeler in this very India specific segment,Tata should be able to price it at a premium to the Piaggio and Mahindra 3 wheelers and still make substantial inroads into their market.

I think the market will much prefer a 4 wheeler ( and load it with over 1 tonne payload)

Obviously the price point. Tata Ace is priced in the range of Rs 2.25 lakh for BS II and Rs 2.35 lakh for BS III (ex-showroom Bangalore). The Gio is priced at Rs 1.65 lakh.

^ Ace is the 1 ton variety.

This, if priced well, will not only do away with the three-wheeer cargo vehicles, but also pose a threat to Omni Cargo.

Very much required for the short urban cargo deliveries.

1) It is not nano based (so the thread name should be revised.)
2) It is not a question of fast reflexes from tata in responding to M&M, af this would have been on the drawing board for quite while - Sid confirms I guess.
3) The visual seems a bit edited.
4) Would be even lower cost than the Ace then..

a nano based pickup would further help drive down costs due to the economy of volumes. It might also fund the development of a diesel engine (its a shame that there is a tata vehicle that doesnt have a diesel powerplant)

My guess is the image is photoshopped. The actual vehicle would be wearing a camouflage. The guy who uploaded the picture on the autoblog site is just trying to conjure up what it might look like.
The only thing that the image confirms is the fact that Tata has a .5 ton vehicle in the works.
