Hey, does anybody know the first multi axle truck in India? Any details? Was it not an Ashok Leyland?
Taurus was the first multi-axle truck, which was derived from an identical British Leyland product. It was introduced in 1972-74 period. It was typically used for oil tankers at that time, and the same front end design - it came with Front-end structure (unlike other AL products).

I think the most powerful on road truck in India must be Volvo FH 12.
And in the off road category it may be caterpillar mining trucks.
I had seen the Tata World truck in the EXCON exhibition, pics can be found in the below link. But on road i have not seen it at least in Bangalore

Isuzu trucks i think its getting launched only next year. The buses have already come on road.
KSTRC has one in Bangalore - Mysore route and a private operator Nakoda in Bangalore- Pune route.

Welll, if only they adopt the safety features too - like the side / laeral under-run protection on the Merc trailers.
Look at the cotnrast between the merc (look between the rear wheels of the trailers) and the white tractor'ed trailer carrying steels coils posted by zappo.
IMO, even AL is guilty of such corner cutting. I feel that having good side underrun protection would have saved 7 lives in the Karunagapally LPG bullet explosion (see the "accidents in India" thread for details).
Mahindra is going to launch Navistar trucks. Any idea withwhom Mahindra has tied up and the launch date. It appears that M&M is gonna give TATA and Ashok Leyland a run for their money.

What about the AL truck below? I guess all trucks looks very similar. May be the look is NOT that important for this category of vehicles.
AL has launched the much awaited UniTruck series. The first models are U4936 (6x4) Tractor and U2523 (6x4) Tipper. The cabin looks similar to the "Newgen" series launched earlier. (picture source: The Hindu)

"The U-Truck platform will straddle the entire range of tractors, tippers and haulage trucks in the 16 – 49 tonne segment, with over 25 models and a host of variants to roll out in 18 months starting April 2010. The range will be powered by BS III and BS IV engines that are also protected for BS V norms, ranging from 160 to 380 hp. Joining the proven ‘H’ series is a new NEPTUNE family of engines - entirely developed in-house - that are stronger and more reliable by design, with higher power and greater fuel efficiency.
One key aspect of the U-Truck platform is its superior, electronic and efficient engine management system. The BS IV versions of ‘H’ engines have Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology while the new NEPTUNE engines are with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology, to reduce emission. I would like to add some points in this discussion regarding the design of cabs.
The first most thing thats resembling is the shorter windscreen in those trucks from TML,IVECO and MB. This is a norm of European design and a cost saving option too.
Apart from that the availability of high roof option in cab.
In India high roof cab was not prefered by customers and so there was no cabs produced in mass numbers. Except few from AMW and Eicher.So with high roof they may look similar.
Further with AL's New Gen cabs the design is purely an India derived version of those Italian designed cabs with the Extra high windscreen and with out high roof.
Regards to AL for developing an Cab with 100% inhouse design. Its a clever marriage between Cargo, G45 FES and with some newly developed parts.
