Actually travelled in one Tirukochi bus today. It was a Edappal built one.

Did not see the front - was ogling at a PYT when this bus comes and stops in front of me. Just hopped in - and found that it is an Aluva bus. The stop was one where Aluva buses are not supposed to stop.

Since I got in through the rear door, did not have a good look at the front end. THe bonnet looked like an AL chassis, but the vibrations on the floor board were uncharacteristic of an AL vehicle. What stuck me was absence of the wheel well - they have lifter up the floor such that the ugly hump at the rear wheel is not there inside.

The bus has a "semi-automatic remote operated" door closer. Obviously, after market attachment. hahaha.

Will post pics later.

Hello,

Last weekend I travelled in Ahmedabad BRTS. It is a system with almost perfect design and a very good implementation. Here are my observations:
  1. The buses are normal Tata non AC buses(i.e. not fully built ones like starbus/globus/marcopolo). Bodies seem to be built locally. There was no body builder's plate on them. Body quality was good.
  2. I have no idea regarding power of the engine. But the acceleration was fantastic.
  3. Bus lanes are at the centre of road. ONLY BRTS buses are allowed in the lanes. Even the normal municipal city transport buses have to travel outside.
  4. Buses have doors on both sides - left as well as right. At the starting point at RTO circle, the door on the left is used. At the rest of the stops, the right door is used. The left door has steps. Right side door does not have any steps.
  5. The height of platforms at the bus stop perfectly matches with the floor height of the bus. So one has to just walk into the bus. No climbing involved.
  6. Bus stops have closing doors. Drivers align the door of the bus perfectly with the door of the stop. There is a box with "STOP" written on it which indicates where the driver should stop. That box has some sensor in it, which probably detects presence of bus and opens the door of bus stop.
  7. There are displays inside bus stops which show time left for the next bus.
  8. Buses do not have on board conductors. Tickets have to be purchased at ticket windows provided at each stop. Each stop also has a route map and fare chart.
  9. There are separate signals for BRTS buses.
  10. BRTS staff is posted at each junction. At unsignalled junctions, they stop all traffic whenever they spot a bus. Bus has first priority.
  11. There are around 40-45 buses. Frequency is 4 minutes.
  12. The other road users have some sense. They do not enter BRTS lane at all!
I am very much impressed with this system! This should be a role model for the other cities. Everything has been perfectly thought out. Just one sore point is that the buses do not have any cushioning.

I'd love to know more about the Ahmedabad System, if it's as good as you say it is. Can you post some pics and data like passenger/day, financials etc.

Has some demolishing been done to implement the system and are the public there happy about it? How about others using the roads in their vehicles? Do they find a separate lane for BRT a problem?

Never spotted Marcopolo on Bangalore road, how many of them are here? and which route?

THere is one between RT Nagar and Vushwapriya Layout (somewhere in Hosur road after Madiwala). This one runs via SHivajiNagar
ANother one which I aware runs between Majestic and Sarjapur via Shantinagar Bus Station.

The above are AC Marcopolos.

There is a non AC one on route 176 between Kaval Byrasandra and Vijayanagar which runms via Malleswaram, Mekhri Circle and RT Nagar.

May be quite a few others as well.

362c Marcopolo runs between Shivaji Nagar and Vishwapriya Nagar via Johnson market, Forum, Madiwala, Bommanahalli and turns right towards Begur road for another 3 kms to reach Vishwapriya Nagar.

Another bus, G2 runs between Brigade road and Electronic city.

There are plenty of Marco Polos all over Bangalore now. The AC buses have been dressed in Blue and Orange liveries, while the non AC ones have only Blue andl all have the JNNURM logos on them.

Few routes which have non AC MarcoPolos :
75 - Vijayanagar to Malleshwaram 18th Cross
95 - Shivajinagar to Kamalanagar
176 - Vijayanagar to Kaval Byrasandra
60A - Jayanagar 9th Block to Vijayanagar

and many more:)

Here is the picture of beautiful AL Lowfloor buses on Jaipur BRTS. These non a/c buses seems far excellant than the one (built by Veera) supplied to KeSRTC under JnNURM. Notice the front doors have only two panel unlike the DTC with four folding panels.

You are right in the fact that Marcopolo is running in the Bangalore City - but the bus in the picture is not headed to Bangalore. The window glass design in Bangalore is different, plus the ones in Bangalore are SLF/LF buses, while this bus appears like an ULF to me.

Must have been going somewhere else, bus body built in Dharwad, hence the KA 25 TC registration.

Do These buses have Kneel function? I can see that the mudguards on the front wheels are bent.
