Anyone having any idea of the oldest running volvo in BMTC and how it has held up? I am sure Binai will have track of such info. Once I had been on a first batch volvo and it was good. No idea on how many kms it had run. The longest run bus I had seen was a JNNURM volvo running under route 201R that had 2.58l kms on the odo. It was as good as new and showed no signs of age. I think the initial batch of volvos will be near the 10l kms mark, but not sure.
I am very curious to know how BMTC goes about engine overhaul and transmission issues, as these buses are not technologically as simple as the TATAs and Leylands. Had seen many volvos with "Check diagnostics for brake ECU at next stop" error showing up. That freaked me out, thus leading to this doubt. How on earth do they run things in such conditions? And how do they solve it?

I had this doubt since a long time . Aren't the Volvo buses using Swedish made Volvo engines ? Deutz is a german engine manufacturer and Volvo has major shares in the company. What I heard was Deutz makes 4-8 L engines for Volvo CE [Construction Equipment] and is the sole supplier. I didn't knew that Volvo CVs were also Deutz powered. |
IIRC, the Volvo 8400 and the 9400 came with the D7E 7.2L engine from the time they were introduced. This engine was built by Deutz.

What about the 9L and 11L ones? Are they also Deutz made?
Here in the Gulf Volvo and Deutz sell Gensets separately. But the engines used are different.

AFAIK, the B9R uses a D9B and B11R uses a D11C engines. Both are Volvo made.

It has JNuRM logo onto it. As replied earlier by the co member here it might be bought by a pvt operator from DelhiRTC for tarmac operations in CIAL. |
Any update on this TML Diesel LF bus spotted at Popular yard?
Liveries of MTC Volvos from different times. 2010 to 2013.
June 2010: This is the original livery of MTC Volvos. Clicked this pic when MTC added Volvos through JNNURM funding.
October 2011: Original livery was still there.
June 2012: After 2 yrs, these Volvos started getting a livery change and this looked a kind of ok.
January 2013: IMO, this should be the worst livery for a volvo.:Frustrati

Has there been another colour change? I thought the initial livery/chocolate brown combo was there to stay along with the "Amma" Green on some buses! Now this brownie ugly colour! What on earth is our Bus corporation thinking? why do they waste money like this on some useless paints rather than maintaining the buses technically sound!:deadhorse

All TNSTUs are undergoing this livery change now. All Mofussil buses will painted in Green(Light+dark shades). City services will have this brownie useless color.
SETC is looking so ugly with the new green livery. IMO, the Ivory+Maroon livery looked good for them. Now they are moving to green livery with same pattern.

Not to forget that straight lines means "Ordinary service", curved lines means "LSS" and god only knows which line will mean that the buses will run properly!:Frustrati What a sheer waste of money! So this is what they have done with the profit/income from increased fares???
So there has been another silent fare rise (I saw your post in "Another" forum) with tickets. Is this raise all over the state (TNSTC/SETC/MTC/Other district TC's) or only in certain districts?

I heard that some TNSTCs have done this. Such things are happening in routes were TNSTCs are playing monopoly. Mainly in South TN. I havent see this fare increase in SETC UDs. Every friday night i use SETC buses in Madurai-Pollachi route. They either charge me Rs.125 or Rs.140. Rs.140 buses take Dindigul byepass route and others take a different route.
We cannot predict the the bus type based on livery. They can even goto this extent. Just write the word "SLF" in a TML bus and collect the double fare. :)

After a long break from going in a BMTC bus, I got to travel in the aero india shuttle buses. These are the newest ones of the lot, and I saw a screen in the center of the console of the driver similar to the volvo bus. Any idea what this is for? Is it as advanced as the volvo, where a load of info is available? A picture will be even better.

This is the heights! Atleast Coronas of BMTC has proper air suspensions to charge Volvo rates.
Just an updated on BEST buses. Surprised to see MH01L80xx buses been taken off the roads. Seems BEST is sticking to the 15 yr deadline very strictly these days.
Came across this article in The Hindu:

It's funny to see the author claiming that MTC buses are all based on truck chassis. Though it makes sense for the non-technical part of the article, the others are simply half-baked information.

Probably the author was referring to lack of air suspension and Air Conditioning. It is un-imaginable to have passenger buses with out air suspension (front and back). This will happen in India, only if the Government mandates it. Many parts of rural india buses travels on roads with out asphalt etc, so it may not be practical, but definitely the Government should mandate air suspension for city buses.
