Experts your thoughts on this....
While I agree to your thoughts, this might not be in the priority list of Railways (not SWR here as Railway Board decides the need for a line) considering the RoI for this new line. A better option could be to build a Metro line connecting Chandapura (Heelalige Stn) to City Center.
As the existing Krishnarajapuram Salem Line was built on existing Meter Gauge alignment and has tighter curves thereby reducing the advantage in distance reduction.

Perfectly pointed out by you. Agree distance wise the hosur rail route is about 70 kms from bangalore to hosur unlike road route. My idea about connecting Hosur and Malur is to divert trains towards Jolarpet by the hosur route. For this the trains can start from Chandapura. The whole idea behind this is to decongest the city railway station as there is no scope for adding new platforms.

Re: Railway Pics

The Bangalore metro phase III extends till Bommansandra. I dont think there is any plan to connect it to Chandapura. The load on the Hosur side is not too high from a railway point of view. But yes, Metro does plan to address the electronic city part.

The pain point is still around Srirangapatna stations, thanks to the old structure from Tippu Sultan's era.

I believe there is sub station between Mandya and Srirangapatna which needs to be up and running as well. By the way any idea if the electrification at the Mysore station and its loop lines are completed?

Indian Train Pics: My two cents

Spotting a fast moving train has been a fascinating experience from childhood. Here I am sharing few snaps which I captured through my lens.

01. Green route Edakumeri (between Sakaleshpur and Subrahmanya Road) very scenic place, with lots of tunnels, bridges and waterfalls.

02. Pamban Bridge, Rameshwaram

03. Ro-Ro service of Konkan railway

04. World Heritage site - Ooty's Nilgiri train (Ooty to Mettupalyam). Ooty - Coonor by Eco Diesel engine. Coonor - Mettupalyam by steam locomotive. This track has innovative "Speed Assist" feature (Rack and pinion system).

Rack and pinion system, kind of "Speed assist feature".

Thanks for the pics. The Rack and Pinion (Rack Railway) is more of Track adhesion feature than Speed Assist. It helps the train to climb gradients (1 in 12 ie. for every 12 meters you gain 1 meter in height) which is not possible by normal adhesion and impossible to achieve from stand still as steel wheels would slip over the tracks. This Abt Rack and pinion system is very unique to India and needs special locos. A point to note that this Rack rail is only present between the foothills of hill (Kallar Stn) and Coonoor. It continues on normal rail after wards from there till Ooty.

Rack and pinion is not unique to India, infact we have only the one line you mentioned. Switzerland has a huge number, but may countries all over the world have them.

Rahul

Agree, you will find it all over the world in hilly and or mountainous terrain. If you are into model trains, its available in H2O and N gauge as well .

Re: Railway Pics

We did this green route trek (Edakumeri, Bangalore - Mangalore railway track) way back in 2004-2005 when the gauge conversion work was going on. This was the state of one bridge. Some miscreants damaged those wooden sleepers.

We took permission and completed this trek with the help of local guide covering 30 kms.

It is a Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU)
It is a suburban local train running between City and Bangarpet /Kuppam.
The pick up in these are amazing. There are diesel ones too.
There are two power cars at either ends.

This is quite similar to local trains in Chennai and Mumbai. Bangalore city needs more of such trains to decongest the roads.

Re: Railway Pics

Finally KR Puram shed gets the WDP4D. SWR should take over KK Express with the WDP4D instead of the Itarsi twins.

Re: Railway Pics

An old photo of a train on the pamban bridge near Rameshwaram. This was shot by my dad sometime between 1985-1987.
The train seems to be hauled by a YDM4 diesel!
Found it in the family photo archive recently and got it scanned!
