Re: Railway Pics

This Toy Train is called Atal Express. This toy train chuffs around the ground in Kankaria lake, Ahmedabad, which runs on a 2.3 km track circling the lake. At a time, the train can carry 150 passengers, including 36 adults.

The large diesel engines are mainly used for freight and they pass through very remote locations which sometimes have rough weather conditions. Cost of electrification and maintenance will be very expensive. That's the reason why there are huge trains with multiple engines.

In the high density routes served by the Acela express, electric locomotives are fairly common.

(2) What is the reason we have 3 gauge widths - is it only cost that has prevented us from converting all track to broad gauge? Thanks.
PS: I am a Newbie to railways.
Cost and the amount of rail traffic I guess.
Lack of space might also be a problem in most applications-

1. The locomotives made for the broad gauge are pretty big, so they have a wide turning radius. The track radius may not be achievable in some hilly sections.

2. Cases where the train shares the road. Example- Darjeeling mountain railway.

Pic 1. SRC WAP 4 22537 at the helm of a late running Howrah Yeshwanthpur AC Express . 6/3/18

Pic 2. A view of the Renigunta station. The Kazipet WAG 7 is attaching itself to the freight for a reversal. It came with a Erode WAG 7.

Pic 3. Erode 22268. The power for Bangalore Tirupati Intercity on 5/3/18. What a loco itwas. Effortlessly hit MPS. Once again ED and its 222 series locos are a class apart

Re: Railway Pics

In line with the above snaps. The real joy is outside Renigunta (Towards Guntur, Gooty side) where you have this massive triangle. FM tharian and my KTM from a ride we did in December 2013. Freight paradise.
Railway Pics-reniguntaouter.jpg

I did a solo ride just to see this dead station for myself. An emu whizzed past. No train stops here.

The most beautiful things especially the old pics is the fixation of time and geographical scenario of yester years India.

Pics like these take us to those dry, hot and dusty climate of post independence India with its future on wheels and tracks.

Thanks for sharing.

Do you know the location? I can see the station board. My hindi isn't good enough to read that board.

Banaswadi (In Bangalore) station back in the early 90's looked a lot like this except that diesel meter gauge locomotives had taken over by then.

@prithm, Thank you for sharing this news. That fact that this is a make & maintain contract is a healthy sign of the good old IR moving with the times.

...The project is a joint venture between Alstom and Indian Railways and involves not only manufacturing 800 fully electric “super-powered” double-section locomotives, but also maintaining them over a period of 11 years...
