Interesting.

A little after this line was commissioned, there was a rule that only a single train was permitted at any given time between Subramanya and Sakleshpur. Also; no freight movement at night. Looks like things have changed, which is good.

How was the convention? What was the mood like at the diesel loco shed (If you did tour the place)?

We were at Subramanya Road at 5:40 am. Since it's the western ghats, sunlight comes a bit late. So technically, it cannot be termed night I guess.

Convention was excellent. The DLS was great too. A few WDG 4s are being repainted to the WDG 4D livery. One WDG 4 12153 is condemned due to a fault in the chassis and will be plinthed outside the station.

We also visited the carriage works, where they have already started undertaking overhauling of MEMU rakes and expansion is underway to accommodate LHB coaches.

On day 2, it was the usual stuff. Presentations, talks, quiz and the awards along with the bid for 2020 convention

India launches the longest train.

Not sure if this was shared on this thread..

IR launched the longest freight train whose length covers 2km, comprising of 147 wagons, three brake and guard vans and four engines. Two engines are coupled in the middle of the train to distribute the load.

Longest Train

I have a whatsapp shared video , but it is not getting uploaded

Re: Railway Pics

WAP1 22004 which should be the oldest P1 in service since the 4 earlier loco's from 22000 is either withdrawn or scrapped.

These loco's were introduced in early 80's as a dedicated passenger loco.

This particular loco belongs to Arrakonnam shed and was rebuilt recently with roof mounted DBR's and headlamps and is earmarked for preservation.

Seen here hauling the passenger from Arakkonam to Bangalore. It once used to haul the prestigious Howrah Rajdhani when it was homed at Ghaziabad. (pic below)

After a long time we traveled to Lucknow by train and came across some lovely views at Old Delhi Railway Station, Lucknow Junction and Kanpur Central.

Surprise encounter with TKD WAP 1.

Never knew Gonda shed also hosts electric locomotives. To me Gonda meant Diesel. In the background is WAP 7 of Lucknow Delhi Swarna Shatabdi.

DLW does not manufacture WAP7, rather assembles them. With Diesel production going down (Alco production has stopped, GM EMD production has also slowed down with HHP locos being manufactured for DFCs, and electrification being given a huge push), DLW has diversified into assembling electric locos, to utilize the spare capacity.

Thanks for the update LordSharan. I think it definitely makes sense from an organisation’s point of view when the market is shifting towards another class of product.

Re: Railway Pics

Couldn't find a proper thread for this, so posting here itself.

The latest experiment on IR - push pull operation of trains. In this, 2 locos are attached to the train. One at the front and one at the back. Both are MUed through control cables spanning the entire length of the train from lead or master loco to trailing or slave loco. Slave loco need not be manned. However some times it is manned by an assistant loco pilot. It eliminates need for banker loco in ghats. This system was first tried with CSMT - Nizamuddin Rajdhani express and now Mumbai - Pune intercity express is the second train to get push pull.

Another advantage is phenomenal acceleration. Have a look at the below video which I shot yesterday.

Till approx 1.5 to 1.7 km before this spot there is a 30 kmph speed restriction due to track maintenance work. In this short distance the train managed to pick up a significant amount of speed! It is almost at 90-95 kmph

The pick up is EMU/metro like. This video shows one from standstill.
Will be fun to sit in the non-AC coach of this train when it starts off.

Are they using cables or Locotrol (Distributed Power) to control the tail end locomotive from the head end one?
