In fact Girish Wagh and team developed the Tata Ace. You are right, he was unknown even in TM before the ACE. Nano was his second major project after ACE.

The Nano hogged all the limelight but until now it's the Ace that actually set the sales registers ringing! Great job.

From being put as garbage collectors to people movers as the Ace Magic this vehicle has covered a very wide market.

I think Maruti missed exploiting the Omni like this.

Absolutely right, I didn't bother doing my homework before writing that. Apologies and thanks to you too, and I found that out from the link @prashanthyr shared.

That is actually a fantastic link, definitely worth a read.

I remember reading it sometime back, guess around 2 years back about the sucess of Ace and on how the whole idea of a four wheeled vehicle to bridge gap between the so called mini trucks (Tata's own 407 and kinds) and goods autorickshaw was born.
It seems someone in Tatas design team ( may be Girish Wagh, cant recollect) was talking to an auto driver and the driver mentioned him about his dream of someday owning and drivng a four wheeled commercial vehicle. On enquiring the reason it seems the driver mentioned he wasnt keen on a four wheeler for getting more profit (due to higher rent / load and all) but since he will be looked upon with some respect compared to an auto driver and also he will be able to get more girls when he plan for marriage. The idea of starting the ACE came after that it seems.

I have always wondered if these vehicles pull off the road for a single day, it would make my drive between home & office a pleasant experience.

Here in Chennai, along with TATA Ace we have share autos occupying either the middle lane or right most lane & a huge line of vehicles following them like an escort

I can say No body understands Indian automotive market better than Tata Motors.
Be it 407 in 1989 or Indica in 1998 or the Ace in 2005. A right product in the right segment at the right time.
Its all because of the Eminent Man of India Inc - Mr.Tata.

407 was before Ratan Tata Regime. Also you missed the Fully built buses.
You should also give credit to Tatas Sales and Market research group. Every other makers (Mahindra and off late AL ) watch what Tata do and then try to follow them instead of spending money on Market Research and come up with the right product.

I will tend to agree with that statement, although I don't have any raw information to prove it, there is enough empirical evidence to lend credence to it.

I came back from my native state, Manipur, just recently. I was shocked to see the number of Tata magic. It is so huge number that the capital city like Imphal has got a separate tata magic stand, like the bus stand, auto stand. Good thing about Tata magic in villages is that they don't need big roads and second they don't need a lot of passengers to recover their running. In villages waiting for a bus is a minimum two hour waiting. With magic, 4 or 5 people on board, they are ready to move and their fares are as cheap as big bus fare.

Kudos to Tata for their Tata ACE Magic.

Blue Ocean Strategy as they call in Coorporate lingo. I think Qualis and Innova both by toyota fall too in this blue ocean strategy.
