Even if they just wanted ,they could have modified the present running ricks with a battery and motor setup.
Sometime ago i even thought of a possible design , but seems its a bit late!!

why head lights? street lights will be there, if not passengers help diver by holding hand held torch. is that not a good idea to cut the cost down?

wind shield and doors will be little expansive job, why cant passengers and driver sit with helmets and rain coats?

why floor below the driver? if the vehicle doesn't climb the steeps at least he can use his legs clap:

Brilliant idea for the times, but really shoddy in execution.
It is imperative that the government now intervenes to ensure urban short commute vehicles are electrified. This requires sustained effort to not only ensure reasonably priced EVs, but also the support infrastructure to keep them running: charging stations, possibility to hot-swap batteries.
Mahindra-Reva today has all the technology required in place. With running costs under a rupee per km, low pollution (not zero since batteries do pollute) AND shared infrastructure costs (in other words subsidized by the various funds for environment, or by saving on a certain fancy balloon)...it is possible.
Then again there is the Auto manufacturers lobby, and Auto unions which may never let a concept on these lines come to life.
I feel that the manufactuing of new rickshaws should banned unless they meet the following criterion:
1. Proper hard top
2. Seat belts for all the passangers
3. Better Ergonomics
4. 4 wheels!

Now, they also have solar panel on top to charge their batteries.
cool, but were there ever the other type of electric rikhshaws in delhi before (like the one we have been having in lucknow)?

This one looks far better and more practical than the wierd looking contraption featured in the previous page. Does not look too drastically different from our current 3 wheels.
However it might be cramped inside.
Glad to see that electric rickshaw concept is getting traction once again, here is the one spotted yesterday (10 may 2012) at Malviya Nagar Metro Station....and there were many G-Riks (That is what they are called now) ferrying passengers in and out from metro station.
This service was launched last month end for a small trip between Select Citywalk Mall and Malviya Nagar Metro station. Here is the news weblink:

But just to let my fellow BHPian friends know who do not know the real facts, Electric vehicles may not be that green as they appear to be.

I am in Biofuel/Renewable Energy domain for last couple of years and have a dedicated thread on Biodiesel on Team-BHP. Based on substantial data and calculations, I can share with you that sometime it may be more depressing to see the overall impact of electric vehicles on environment than what one might have imagined.

Normally, all this calculation is done when we do "Life Cycle Analysis" for a Renewable Fuel/Technology. That estimates each and every aspect of complete value chain and consider energy conversions, losses, efficiencies etc.
