The brijbasi sticker at the rear made me think for a moment whether its brijbasi or Brabus . I was wondering what is Brabus doing in a fire truck. I have seen this in another vehicle(I guess a garbage truck) there too at first it made me feel a garbage truck with Brabus?? I guess even Chennai fire service has a similar volvo, but thats on a FH12 chassis i guess.

The FH12 chassis is no longer in production so I guess that must be an old one. Initially MFB had only one Fire Tuck with Bronto Skylift and it was based on a Tata chassis. But owing to the rapid increase in the no of highrises, it has bought a few fire trucks based on Volvo FM9 chassis. The most recent purchase is a MAN fire truck.

In the topmost pic, the Volvo firetrucks to the extreme left and right are based on the FM9 chassis while the one in the middle is based on the FM400 chassis

There are total 2 ways in which Mumbai Fire Brigade uses MAN Trucks:
1. As water tanks.
2. As fire engines, with Bronco Skylifts.

Fire Department in most major cities have had MAN, Mercedes and Volvo trucks for a long time. Most of them are used with external hydraulic attachments for high lift ladders.

Spotted two humble Ashok Leyland fire trucks in Vepery, Chennai during one of the Chennai Photowalks.

Time was around 7 AM.

Taken using a Samsung Galaxy S2.







Was surprised to see an ambulance parked.
Apparently every fire station should have an ambulance always on standby. Never knew.

All these Ashok Leyland fire trucks in Tamilnadu are built by TNSTC-Coimbatore's Pollachi and Udumalpet body building units. They are registered in Coimbatore and sent to different fire service stations across the state. Older trucks will have TN38 and newer trucks will have TN66 registrations.

In almost all the fire service stations in TN, i either see an old Ambulance or an 108 ambulance standing nearby.

Spotted this Bronto Skylift F54 HDT 2000 testing in Bangalore today. As per below news on The Hindu dated 14th Apr 2011, they already had one. Is it the second one?

"More MUSCLE:The ladder platform of the Bronto Skylift F54 HDT 2000 is fitted to a Volvo chassis and can become fully operational in two minutes flat.
Bangalore: The Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services has gone high-tech with the arrival of the advanced hydraulic platform-cum-turntable ladder from Finland, capable of reaching a dizzying height of 54 metres (roughly 13 storeys high).

This Rs. 10-crore equipment, popularly called the Bronto Skylift, will boost the department's capability to combat fire, particularly in high-rises. It will be formally inducted into the department's fleet on Thursday, when the National Fire Safety Week opens.

Carlton Towers

Last year's Carlton Towers fire on HAL Airport Road, which claimed nine lives, had exposed the department's unpreparedness to handle high-rise conflagrations. According to the department, some 800 fires are reported in the city every year, of which at least 5 per cent are in high-rises.

“The increase in the number of high-rises in the city has created the need for such advanced rescue and fire-fighting vehicle,” an officer at the R.A. Mundkur Fire and Emergency Services Academy told The Hindu here.

High water discharge

The ladder platform of the Bronto Skylift F54 HDT 2000 is fitted to a Volvo chassis and can become fully operational in two minutes flat. It has a high-capacity stainless steel waterway for flows up to 2,000 litres a minute.

The vehicle has an integrated rescue ladder and a safety cage which has a 400-kg capacity. The unit can turn 360 degrees to make rescue and fire-fighting operations easier.

Four people can sit in its air-conditioned cabin and all operations can be controlled by a computer onboard.

“Our firemen had to struggle to reach the fire-affected parts of Carlton Towers. This new vehicle can help them tackle any major fires with ease,” said an officer at the Mayo Hall fire station.

The department has selected some firemen for specialised training in operating the vehicle. Sources said experts from Finland would train them"

Came across a Fire Bike for the first time!

Spotted around Thane, and thought this is probably the most appropriate thread to share it in.

The bike had several small fire extinguishers onboard. Perhaps multiple types (for different kinds of fires?).

A pretty cool idea for being a first-responder to smaller fires, especially in Indian conditions where traffic and dense urban conditions can really hold up larger fire trucks.

If I remember right, Bangalore fire Department had a Enfield Bullet Fire emergency bike around 2000 that looked similar. It never really took off for whatever reason, but now again Enfield custom makes these for few fire and rescue departments.
