Repair of Automotive Meters, Axles, Dampers & ORVMs - Javed (New Delhi) Speciality / USP:
Here is a talented specialist who fixes automotive parts that are generally replaced (usually at quite a high cost). Complete meter consoles, motorized ORVMs and front axles are very expensive for most cars, though things rarely go wrong with any of these. But when things DO go wrong, the only advice one hears is to throw away the old unit and buy a new one. Here's where these people can help.
Javed has been in the business of repairing automotive meters since 1992, and before that, his father Sharief (popularly known as Mian-ji by locals) had been in the trade for many years. They have also diversified into repairing front axle CV joints.
New Delhi Meter Shop, as his establishment is called, is located at the Sukhdev Market opposite Defence Colony, at the far end of Kotla Mubarakpur (see map below). Work handled:- Repair of all types of automotive meters, both mechanical and electronic, including speedometers, odometers, fuel and temperature meters, RPM meters etc.
- Repair of front axle CV joints
- Repair of shock absorber struts and hydraulic damper units
- Repair of motors of motorized ORVMs
- Repair / low cost replacement of broken tail lamps & headlamps with used units
What I like:- Quick, confident and efficient work
- Short-term warranty for work done
What I don't like:- Located in a very crowded place where parking is a headache - but then Javed has his understanding with other repairers, and they make space for each other.
Pricing:- Feels a little steep, but worth it considering your other option is to spend a whole lot more to replace a complete meter unit / axle unit / ORVM.
What I have used his services for:- My ageing Swift (8 years, 90,000 km) had its speedometer needle stop working a couple of days ago. Everything else was working fine. A new speedo console was recommended, and the price is over Rs.6000. Seems Swifts of this model do have this problem in many of the cars. Javed opened up the console and replaced the motor that drives the needle, reloaded the software in the chip inside, and we were back to a normally working meter in 1 hour flat! The cost: Rs.1600. Time taken: 1 hour.
- The Swift's left ORVM was not adjusting properly (an internal cable was broken) - Javed replaced the unit with a second-hand one for Rs.500.
