You can also look at the tachometer from Ritz Petrol. I think the backlight is orange in the WagonR model that you have. Right?

Ritz petrol had a 4-cylinder engine. Our Waggy has 3-cylinder engine. So, the tachometer from Ritz won't be a right choice for the Waggy.

That will not matter actually. The Tacho picks up engine speed signal coming from the ECU and this will have the same signal irrespective of the engine being a 3 or 4 cylinder. The number of cylinders concept applies only when you use an analogue tacho and pick up signals from the ignition coils.

I had suggested Ritz Petrol one as the backlight will match the rest of the lights on the dashboard whereas it is on the reddish side on the A-Star tachometer.

Pardon my ignorance once again. I decided to go with the A-star tachometer because of this:

The tachometer I used for the WagonR is from the Ritz since both are 4 cylinder engines so the logic used in the tachometer would almost match and give out correct readings (Verified using Suzuki Diagnostic Tool @ MASS).

Colour is not an issue for me.

Thank you very much for your inputs. Happy to learn new things.

Could you please shed some light on how to tap a parallel feed from the PS connector? I tried something, but the PS light came out whenever I started the car. And as I don't wish to splice any wire, I am trying vishwaschettri's procedure for connecting the tachometer.

And is this wire okay?

I think the PS connector is not getting inserted properly hence the PS light on the instrument console.

If you don't want to splice, get a terminal extraction tool and remove that terminal from that connector housing. Solder another wire and refit that terminal into that connector. Will look stock and won't create any issues in future.

Link to terminal extraction tool.

Forgot to mention this. When both ends of the wire are connected (one to the connector and the other to the tachometer), the PS light glows. When the tachometer end is set free, the PS light doesn't glow. What does this mean? And how to do a trial of the working of the tachometer?

Thanks,
Sooraj.

Can you send pictures of the wiring connections that you have done?!

Also check the earthing that was used for the tachometer.

Re: DIY: Tacho Install in Maruti WagonR

Successfully installed the tachometer in our Wagonr. My sincere thanks to BHPians a4anurag and vishwaschettri for guiding me throughout, and clarifying all my silly doubts. Fitted the tachometer months back. As the rpm readings were inaccurate, I thought of posting the post later, believing that the tachometer would work perfectly alright some day. But, the readings are still inaccurate. The tachometer behaves like a diesel one. Anyways, I'm quite happy with the tachometer. Attaching the images below:

Materials required:

1. Tachometer

2. Fuse tap cable (mini)

3. 15A fuses (mini)

4. Stanley crimping tool

5. Heat shrink tubes

DIY: Tacho Install in Maruti WagonR-20191225_204708.jpg

6. Insulation tape

7. Wires

8. Screw driver

Preparation of the tachometer before installation:

1. Used thick sponge, cardboard, screw, fur and araldite for making the base.

2. Extended the wires and neatly insulated them with heat shrink tubes and insulation tape.

DIY: Tacho Install in Maruti WagonR-20191225_215328.jpg

The installation process:

1. Removed the dashboard panel underneath the steering and the one which houses the bonnet opening lever.

2. Made a hole in the centre deck of the dashboard to pass the wires.

3. Inserted all the four wires through the hole. Brought the red, yellow and blue wires below the steering column.

4. Used the blue wire to tap parallel feed from the brown wire of the PS module (This is an image for reference).

5. The positive (red wire) and the wire for the backlight and needle light (yellow wire) were crimped to the fuse tap cable using the crimping tool.

DIY: Tacho Install in Maruti WagonR-20191230_163413.jpg

6. Two 15A fuses were installed to the fuse tap cable, and replaced the accessory fuse (under the dashboard) with the fuse tap.

7. Connected the negative (black wire) to a screw below the centre deck.

8. Used Fevikwik to attach the tachometer to the centre deck.

P.S.:
1. As I made the base using thick sponge, the fitment is not rattle-free, but I'm okay with it.
2. Please don't install A-star tachometer in Wagonr. Better try the Ritz tachometer.

Cheers,
Tom Sooraj.
