Get the EGR valve, EGR cooler and intake manifold opened and cleaned thoroughly.

Go to a reputable FNG that is familiar with diesel engines. Because it is a crucial part. See my thread on EGR cleaning and get the required spares before hand (gaskets, clamps etc).

For injectors cleaning part, I'll first suggest your friend to go with fuel additives like System-D or ADON-D. If these don't help, then go with injector cleaning.

Where the car used mainly? City or highways?
