Insulation of choice used to be glass fibre, or asbestos. Asbestos is banned in most countries.

There are tubular insulation used for AC piuping that can withstand the heat.

In my mother country, pipes are insulated to conserve heat, but primarily to prevent freezing. It is called lagging. The material used is similar to what is used for AC gas pipes here, but thicker.

Do remember this. When you use foam for insulation, it is the trapped air doing the work, not the material. Don't make the mistake that I see almost every AC installer make here: binding the lagging (insulation) so tightly that it is compressed. Don't compress the insulation.

Honestly in a hot climate like kerala, I do not see the need for insulating the hot water pipes.

We also have around 35 meters of non insulated cpvc carrying solar hot water and do not see the need for insulating in a climate of Bangalore.

Oh wow. 35 meters? Sure? For me, have to discard 15 literes of almost room temperature water if the solar installation is to be of any use, if water is used v after more than 3-4 hours interval. Sort of tallies with existing pipe length and diameter. In my presented rented flat, the hot water probably through a sunken slab, reaches room temperature faster than the concealed plumbing through brick walls though both places have similar distances from the electric geyser to the shower. (one of the bathrooms at home is on electric geyser.). Since water will be taken to 4 points on both eastern and western side of the house from a solar heater mounted on the northern side, i need to ensure it does not loose heat. Else, the whole exercise is futile.

Looked at the options by Aroy above . the insulation looks a bit overkill - seems it is too thik, otherwise fulfills all my requirements. But will research it more.

I wish our piping was not mostly inside the walls. Despite the climate, it is heating up masonry on its way to the tap!

35 meters approx 110feet from the Solar heater on 3rd floor terrace to apartment on the lowest floor and farthest from the solar heater. Half inch CPVC pipe is used.

You are right about wasting around a bucket of water if the solar is used at non bathing hours (7AM to 9AM). This does happen in colder months. However, in hot months, I barely have to collect 1/2 bucket of cold water before the hot water starts. Maybe because the plumbing is exposed to direct sunlight in our building, it heats the water inside the pipe as well. Since we do not usually use the hot water at other time, it does not bother me much. What I do is use the collected cold water to mix with the hot water to reduce the temperature of the water. However, this will not work if I need to use the shower.

What ever the ambient temperature, you are loosing energy (het) if it cools down. Assuming the water from solar heater is at least 80 degrees, 40 degrees of Delhi summer will still cool it by a few degrees in 20m. At 30 degrees the cooling is more.

Why waste resources, insulate the pipes and you have saved a lot.

Please suggest how can I buy e-clips online, without a minimum order quantity of hundreds or thousands?

Nowhere I can buy just 10 or 15 quantities for a nominal price. The local shops in Cochin just don't have it. The prices on Amazon are in 4 digits. Can anyone suggest any other source sources that I have not come across yet? Thanks!

The battery progression. Sometimes it feels like the person who drives a Hummer to work, alone. I only ever ran out of juice mid task, with the small 1.3A battery that ships with the drill. But, the bigger ones seem to indicate I buy it just in case I need it. Cordless tools have come a long way.

It also helps that DeWalt gives any one tool free with a battery purchase. This year I got a $230 router because I bought a battery for $199.

Please suggest the correct tool for this clamp. The opening between the legs is 80 mm. I tried looking for a monkey plier, but none of them open this wide.

These type of clamps are sometimes referred to as equal pressure clamps. They are supposed to clamp the hose better and more evenly along the complete circumference. Can’t say zo have noticed the difference. My Jeep is knitted out with these, but none of my other cars are.

I got myself three special pliers



One has a remote beak, so you can get into small spaces. Very useful on the Jeep radiator hoses.

They all have this ratchet mechanism, so you squeeze it down, which opens the hose clamp, the ratchet holds it opened, in place so you easily remove or install the clamp from/over the hose.



If you can’t get these use one of these, you just need to get the right size. This is my medium one, I have one considerable larger and one much smaller.
