Fact is that the Middle East market is just as bad! Here in Dubai, the base model Hyundai Accent (Verna in India) and Elantra are still sold with a single airbag and no ABS - in 2020 , atleast in India most cars >4 lakhs get 2 airbags and ABS as standard now.

Even a Mid-spec Nissan Patrol (2019 model, not sure about 2020) which costs around 260,000 AED (INR 50 lakhs) comes with just 2 airbags with no curtain airbags. And to think that the Gulf countries are actually prosperous countries! Goes to say that it's more about mentality than how rich the country is!

True there's probably a difference in safety preferences in western countries vs India/Middle East but I think the onus on this should be on Government regulations.

What's stopping the Indian Government from mandating ABS, EBD and 6 airbags at a minimum (2 is not enough) for all cars sold in India?

This is just a case of vested interests/lobbying getting in the way of good and sensible laws. Such lobbies exist everywhere, but if they get in the way of common sense laws then we have only ourselves (the Government and the people who voted them to power) to blame.
