I would assume the worst if the rear hadnt banged into the side barrier. Probably the vehicle would have flipped over. Thank your lucky stars, buddy.

A high speed run on an SUV and slamming the brakes is a recipe for disaster.

is a situation that you will be facing somewhat often rather than rarely.

Well this is what I follow always [again after facing myself a similar situation and that on a M800] when I overtake a series of trucks at high speed in daylight situation:

1. Have all headlights on power beam.

2. A series of horn sounds in a rhythm pattern [like beep - beep - beep] as a I approach from a distance and increasing the intervals between the horns as i go past the trucks.

3. I look and keep an eye on the truck tyres and see its relation with the white divider mark line, by that you can make out early [rather than seeing the truck body] what the bugger is upto.

4. As you had no way on the right side, a left side overtaking does become necessary on the highway in some situations. These I do only when there is sufficient space on my left side also. i.e, a lane plus some space. Never when it just makes a tight fit.

Dont worry too much but definitely you will be carefull in such situations - let not this make you stop enjoying the Safari for what is meant to be - driving on the highways.

High speed mean 100plus or 120plus? Curious.

I was honking but stopped when I neared them since I was observing them from far away and they were driving their lane and were following each other closely. So started concentrating on the overtaking then.

There was no other way than braking with the truck nose on my right and barriers on the left. Everything happenned in a fraction and the reaction was instinctive.

But I learned my lesson, speed was high, should have honked and used the dippers, which I usually do, but perhaps confidence overtook me.

If you don't have ABS, yes, it is a tricky situation; but he really didn't have a choice as he was already committed to the manuever

I guess your experience would make you value ABS more for high speed driving.

I don't believe that you are saying that, not after all our exchanges on other threads about the usefulness or applicability of ABS on our roads

But, a very wise decision as & when you do go for it

Good to know it didn't mothball into a major situation & you escaped with mild damage to the Safari.

However, another thing that might help you are good tyres. Next time when you go in for a tyre change buy something better than the stock Dueler's & you might just be surprised with the difference they make to the braking & handling.

P.S. Suman - C3PO does indeed work at Motorsmith's.

Oh? I stand corrected then - I thought it was one of Mahesh's usual gags

OT: I never had any problems with ABS, only had disagreement on where it will help and where not.

In my case, it would have helped in the manueverability.

dadu, thats a major accident averted, hats off to the safari !!

I strictly follow point 2 & 3 mentioned by adc, that helps a lot in the highways specially the multiple honkings before overtaking
I also sometime see the Rear View Mirror of the bus/truck, more times the driver do have a glance at you...

The close-up shot of the big scratch shows how close it was to a bigger damage. All that thick steel from TISCO was a saviour. Actually should've stopped that errant truckwallah and knocked some sense in his head.

Didn't he know how to use his RVM? There are certain etiquettes of Highway that these truckers etc. follow. Seems he didn't.

Glad to know Dadu, that you & fam are safe. Drive safe..

Well the inevitable never stops in its way. I don't intend to rub salt into your wound, but then this is very common on the GQ.

I think you should have been extra-careful and expected the worse.

I immediately brake hard and instinctively moved the steering slightly to the left to avoid a direct hit (my wifey told me speedo was at 120). Big screeching noise/ rubber burning and I guess that made the overtaking truck move back into his lane immediately.
If I were to see two trucks driving parallel to each other I certainly would slow down.Coz I know these nitwits are capable of a last minute mood swing and will change lanes.

Nevertheless all is well and thank god you and your family are safe. The beast can always be repaired.
