Hehehe. I was talking from the vehicle design point of view. 10% increase in ability is quite a good increase. And if people are going to benefit, then why not we argue. You didn't say 10% before. Right? It took a few posts to get it out. And may be we can make the those vehicle makers manual writers and design engineers to take notice of your experience. Anyway, sorry if you feel that it was for argument sake. But it is a healthy one if people get benefitted.

Holyghost you are really one lucky ghost who was saved by the God & The King - Tata Safari.

Your king has taken lot of pain and saved you him a big hug.

We hope the ICICI lombard sorts out the issue in geting the King into shape at the earliest and you start going for long drives again.

Buddy keep enjoying long drives even in night do not worrycheers:, these things happen very rare.

HolyGhost, its good to know that you are safe and sound.

Going by the pics and your description, the whole incident must have been pretty scary. I too do most of my driving in Kerala trips (Alleppey) and at speeds of close to 100kmph. The over-confidence bit you have told about is very true. With each trip I've been taking lesser time, partly owing to the road conditions in TN and KA improving (4 laning and such), but otherwise its pure speeding.

Also, I appreciate the fact that you are not getting defensive about the whole thing. Many would've just not bothered to post something like this in a forum, fully aware that you'll have some brick-bats coming your way!!!

@HolyGhost, while I would think that the trucks should have given you a better indication of the path of the road, I will still take your word that you were not able to judge the path of the road at that point.

It is important that you all are safe. That's what gives me, and all of us here, the comfort.


And as mentioned by TSK & Ramky, SUV's are a different kind of animal. Not to be handled as care-freely as one would handle a car. The dynamics and handling are very different than what a car has. And this is one of the reasons I do not normally give my truck to others. Especially because driving is second nature. In an emergency situation, a person will not think much - but will react in a way that is consistent with his normal driving requirements (what his regular vehicle needs).

It is not how much weight that influences the CG change, as much as at what height. In this case, there was atleast 200kg of weight way above the fuel tank which was making the CG higher than normal.

I seriously don't understand why everyone is going deep into physics (weight ratio) and arguing with me? Also see fluid dynamics inside a fuel tank if you really interested in physics!
As i said earlier, fill your SUV to varying levels and be a judge yourself.
Stop theorizing!!!

Right, Tejas. Let us stop theorizing, and let us take fluid dynamics into a different thread. We were just trying to say that the quantity of fuel did not contribute so much to the situation as the other aspects. CG was key there, but not the quantity of fuel.

I would also invite you to try the changes with a passenger & without a passenger - it will make much more difference than the quantity of fuel.

Anyway, let's get back to the Safari in question, and importantly our friends there.

Guys,

How about a Scorp? In similar condition would a Scorp also topple? If I am not wrong the Center of gravity in Scorp is lower than that of Safari..

Thats because, what you say is not practical and does not happen. What condor says is true. In comparison to the weight of the vehicle, the weight of the fuel in the tank is minimal and that would not affect the CG.

If you dont follow physics, some friends try to make you understand what you left as choice in school.

Let's not get personal. I've been a science student and i understand physics very well including fluid dynamics. As a trauma sports specialist, i can explain to you in detail the fluid dynamic movement of fluids in a person's brain which may cause blackouts in increased g-forces!

Carrying passengers is something that cannot be avoided but carrying less fuel can be. Also everytime you take a turn, your passenger is not going to lean against the car in the direction of the turn as the fuel does!

If you all have read my post clearly, i have maintained very clearly that the increased fuel which give the little extra in terms of corner handling.

a scorpio would meet with a similar fate even though it has a lower centre of gravity. SUVs are SUVs and toppling at high speed cornering is in the DNA of SUVs!
