Tesla Model X electric CUV launch in 2015

The crossover fad is one that no brand across the spectrum is looking to miss out on. Be it luxury brands or regular passenger car-makers, everyone is looking to cut a slice from the segment. Electric vehicle maker Tesla too, has been working on its offering to capitalize on the segment and the Model X crossover, has even been caught on test ahead of its launch that will finally take place this year.

Tesla revealed the Model X in February 2012 and the car was supposed to enter production towards the end of 2013. Reservations for the Model X opened immediately after the reveal and the reservation process was similar to that of the Model S'. Any fresh bookings will now see deliveries in early 2016. The vehicle will share its underpinnings with the Model S and the Model X will be available with the same battery options, which means the variants could include a 70 kWh (324 BHP) AWD, an 85 kWh AWD (416 BHP) and could get the sedan’s P85D variant that makes 682 BHP. The travel range could be between 225 kms-425 kms on a full charge.

The Model X largely looks like a Model S sedan with jacked up springs and black cladding along the skirting, wheel arches and bumpers. The electric vehicle will seat 7 passengers and will feature a dual motor all-wheel drive system.

The Model X also features the "Falcon wing" rear doors that open up in the same fashion as a gull wing, but are articulated at the roof to avoid taking up too much space to the sides. The wings also enable passengers to enter the car while standing up. Tesla Chief Elon Musk says the doors will open in any parking spot that has enough room for a person to fit through. While the feature is certainly intriguing, the real world practicality remains to be seen.

IMHO opinion the proportions are perfect and the body looks sexy. Hope this will create the buzz just like Model S. Urban commuter and 7-seater is odd though.

Also perhaps the only vehicle to have rear gull wing doors? These might look cool, but I don't think they're practical. Besides the time taken for opening & closing, you won't be able to access the rear in a congested parking spot.

Must say, where the Model S 'wowed' everyone at the time of its launch, the Model X' styling is very boring. The CUV body style isn't appealing either.

Tesla Model X to be fastest SUV in the world.

Speaking to the media , Musk reveals,
Quote:
We will offer ludicrous mode on the [Model] X, it will be 10 percent heavier car, so you’d expect the X be 3.2 or 3.3 seconds [in 0-60mph acceleration], probably 3.3 seconds due to higher centre of gravity
Quote:
The X is roughly 10 per cent greater mass, energy usage per mile will be roughly 10 per cent higher than the S, so we have a five or six percent greater battery packing so the net range impact is only around four or five percent [compared to the S], so that’s good for the X
That means the top-spec Model X should be able to manage at least 400km on a single charge.

Quote:
The highly anticipated Model X SUV, which goes on sale in North American markets in September this year (Australia delivery dates expected in the third quarter of 2016), will become the fastest SUV in the world by outpacing the BMW X5M and X6M, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. Expected SUV Models from Lamborghini and Bentley are yet to disclose their power or performance figures, though we suspect they will be unable to match that of the Model X.

re: Tesla Model X electric CUV launch in 2015

New Tesla Model X In Production configuration.

Tesla has two levels of reservation for the new Model X, one for the regular model that requires a $5,000 deposit and another one with a much heftier $40,000 deposit for the limited Signature series.
The Model X seen in the screenshots and pictures is the top-of-the line "Signature Series" that starts from $132,000, not including a $7,500 Federal tax credit. It comes with a 90kWh battery pack and a boatload of standard features such as the Autopilot self-parking system, ventilated leather seats with heating and cooling, two flat-folding third row seats for adults, and "independently operable, 3-adult second row seats".

The Signature series will also get Falcon Wing rear doors with "built in sensors" to prevent users from hitting them into garage ceilings of "any height".
According to the spec sheet, the standard Model X Signature model will have an estimated driving range of 240 miles (386 km), with the 259hp front and 503hp rear electric motors offering a 0-60mph time of 3.8 sec and a top speed of 155mph (250km/h).
