Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Kochi is gearing to go EV, targets 10 million e-vehicles by 2022.

Quote:
- KSEB has invited bids from private agencies to set up charging stations.

- to supply power at the rate of Rs 5 or Rs 5.5/unit at these stations.

- An eight-minute charging technology will be introduced for fast-charging

- There will be battery swapping stations along with charging stations where motorists can exchange batteries that have no charge

- a mobile app will be developed for Kochi, by which motorists can locate charging stations and book a slot for charging.

-a workshop would be organized in a month to finetune the state’s electric vehicle (EV) policy
Challenges:

Quote:
e-vehicles are not fully eco-friendly due to the severely polluting nature of used batteries. Setting up facilities for the safe disposal of such batteries will be the second challenge
Quote:
E-buses are usually low-floor buses with low ground clearance. Big speed breakers and unscientifically constructed roads and flyovers will easily damage the motors of these buses which are kept near the axles; the wear and tear will be maximum.

EU to offer billions of funding for electric battery plants:

The EU is planning to allow state aid for electric battery research and will offer billions of euros of co-funding to companies willing to build giant battery factories. Brussels is concerned that the EU auto industry, which employs 13m people, could be left behind in the race to build mass market electric vehicles because of their reliance on batteries from Asia.

Roughly 80 per cent of the world’s existing and planned battery production capacity is in Asia, according to Bloomberg data. China alone has 69 per cent, with the US at 15 per cent and the EU at under 4 per cent.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Electric vehicle sales are fast approaching 5% market share in China. In September, ICE (petrol/diesel) vehicles sales decreased by 12% while EV sales increased by whopping 70% in World's largest automobile market.

September sales in China:
Total sales: 20,60,500 (-12.04% YoY),
EV sales: 98,667 (+70% YoY)

Out of all EV sales, full-electric sales are ~74% and remaining are plug-in hybrids.

@sri_tesla; Remember China has a near stranglehold on Lithium supply. So they are bound to have the highest production, but natural.

EV sales in India grow to 56,000 units in FY2018, demand up for 2Ws but abysmal for PVs.

Quote:
FY2018 saw de-growth in sale of electric four-wheelers whose sales are down year-on-year by 40 percent.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

VW started construction of its new plant to produce electric vehicles in China. Together with Chinese partner SAIC, they will build new $2.45 billion plant which will have capacity of 3,00,000 (3 lakh) EVs per year based on MEB platform. They would make VW and Skoda models as well as Audi cars in this plant.

Meanwhile, in another news, it appears the EV landscape might just have received another shot in the arm with wireless charging system -

techxplore.com/news/2018-10-kilowatt-wireless-vehicles.html

Quote:
The wireless system transfers 120 kilowatts of power with 97 percent efficiency, which is comparable to conventional, wired high-power fast chargers.

"By 2025, the majority of all the car companies’ offerings worldwide are going to be electric." - Hyundai's Senior Chief Designer Chris Chapman

In an interview to Insideevs.com, Hyundai's Senior Chief Designer Chris Chapman shares more details about the design of EVs. He also mentioned that
"We’re entering a high-tech age where all cars. They are all going to be Electric. By 2025, the majority of all the car companies’ offerings worldwide are going to be electric."

Hyundai currently selling some of the most efficient EVs. Hyundai Ioniq and Kona have some of the best MPGe ratings and great EPA range numbers.

If true, and there's good indications it very well will be, many of us will possibly be on look out for stable enough manufacturers of Li-related batteries for long term investments.

I have my doubts whether wireless systems can handle the sort of currents/power needed. So there look like a pie in the sky. You just cannot transfers the 10's of kW required.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

I have seen in many EVs that there is still an SLI battery under the hood. The SLI is used in Internal Combustion Engines to start the car, which makes sense. But does anybody know what is its use in an EV? It seems like a dead weight to me and is heavy as well.

It is also used to operate emergency lights to indicate hazard. When the drivetrain is disabled automobiles are required by law to have this ability. For whatever reason if a EV stalls it needs a second power source to indicate hazard.
