Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Anant Geete said that FAME-2 can be expected within a month

FAME-2 :The scheme is proposed for a period of five years and intends to give a boost to electric mobility in the country.

Quote:

Pune: The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Sector Enterprises, Anant Geete said that the final government approval for the Rs 5500-crore second-leg of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme can be expected as early as in a month and the scheme will also include incentives for electric bicycles.

“FAME-2 is completely ready with us. We are going to approach the cabinet. We have already sent our proposals to all the other concerned ministries,” he said on the sidelines of the Symposium on International Automotive Technology, here on Friday.

“One thing that we have added to the scheme is that now there will be (a provision for incentives on) electric bicycles,” the minister said.

Small, Entry-Level Electric Cars Won’t Be Affordable will remain mostly ICE - Volkswagen

The fact is that it’s easier to electrify high-end, premium models, SUVs – or, in general, expensive and bigger cars. Small city cars require the lowest battery costs to become competitive.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

VW's first mobile charging stations will be set up this year in VW's hometown of Wolfsburg, Germany and rolled out to other cities in 2020.

The German carmaker, which is headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, also said it would start producing mobile electric car charging stations at its nearby plant in Hannover, which currently makes engines and castings.

Quote:

VW will bundle cells from electric car batteries into storage powerbanks that can be used to recharge up to 15 electric cars at a time and be transported to locations where power is needed, such as a stadium during a rock concert. Customers can find the mobile charging stations using an app on their smartphone, it said.

"It can be set up flexibly and independent of the power supply wherever it is needed: for example, in public parking lots in the city, on company premises, or as a temporary charging point at large-scale events," VW said.

A depleted charging point could be exchanged for a new one, or the station could be permanently attached to the power supply to recharge itself, VW added. The battery charging station would allow VW to store solar and wind energy, and could recharge itself during off-peak hours, helping to ease strain on the power grid, the carmaker said.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Let me summarize the situation today:

1. It is accepted that the power pack will be underfloor. This is also desirable from the low Centre of Gravity point of view. This (flat floor) will not help us in the high ground clearance area.

2. By the looks of it pure EVs should arrive soon. Probably next summer when BS-VI kicks in.

3. Maintenance / repair cost of EVs will be far lower. Simplicity, fewer moving parts, etc will see it it. I do not expect all firms to have custom EV facilities. So our boffins will have to learn.

4. Service intervals will be longer and services should be cheaper.

I am not too sure how many of our engines will survive the switch to BS-VI. Maruti has already stated that they will be forced to stop small diesels since the costs of BS-VI may add up to about 1.5lakhs per car.

At the moment, no. At best it may be able to power the a/c (which is a big deal in itself) and electrical peripherals such as lights. It cannot yet charge an automotive batter or even top it up sufficiently.

But yes, with better solar panels and stuff, and more efficient batteries, it is a possibility in the future.

Gujarat government asks Uber, Ola to launch electric taxis

The Gujarat government is planning a big push for use of electric vehicles in Ahmedabad and other major cities. It is creating an electric vehicle (EV) promotion policy focusing on developing infrastructure network for battery swapping and charging facilities at affordable rates, and provide incentives to EV use.

Quote:

Speaking to reporters, Saurabh Patel, state energy minister said on Monday, “To promote the use of electric vehicles by private owners, we had a meeting with taxi service providers like Ola and Uber and have asked them to start electric vehicle services. The government may give some incentives to them to promote use of EVs.”

Patel said the government is keen on using electric vehicles for its own services. He said, “The state public transport department is buying electric buses to ply between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. Also, local Ahmedabad bus services may begin using EVs as soon as the proper charging stations are ready on their premises.”
Stressing on the importance of battery recharge networks for electric vehicles, Patel said, “The new proposed policy will focus on motivating the people at large and recharge station promoters. The government will announce incentives for recharge stations, where charged batteries are made available in a few minutes taking no more time than an ordinary car takes to refuel at a petrol pump.”

“Gujarat will probably be the first state to give incentives to use electric vehicles. We will be the top state in investing in renewable power as well as use of electric vehicles,’’ Patel further added

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

I came across a wild(?) post about the Tata eVision. A saloon to be launched in the 2020 Motor Show.

The prototype is there. The price has been variously stated as 12lakhs to 25lakhs. Supposed to have a battery life of 1000km (I doubt this) per charge. Given the need for air-conditioning in India, I wonder what will the life be in regular use with near 100% aircon.

Does raise one idea, how about double glazing in cars? What is the gain/loss with a heavier glass house.

Didn't find a more apt thread for this article. The video shows flammable lithium ion battery to catch fire. Fortunately the rider slowed down to jump off the vehicle, the pillion survived some burns.

In a high accident prone country like ours, we need safer battery chemistry like LTO or LFP based cells which are not flammable. But for a two wheeler it's a challenge because the LFP and LTO have lower energy density compared to Li-on battery.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Electric cars in Europe - 2018.

SUVs and the new Nissan Leaf take the EV market in Europe to a new record.

Quote:
Norway is the largest and the fastest growing EV market in Europe. EVs counted for almost 31% of total registrations last year, making it the market with the highest EV infiltration in the world. Almost one in four of the EVs sold in Europe last year remained in Norway
But diesel still popular in many EU countries.

Quote:
Despite the growth, pure electric cars are still a rare sight in some of the biggest markets in Europe. In Italy, they only counted for 0.26% of total registrations as most of the population continued to purchase diesel cars. Spain is the second largest vehicle producer in Europe, yet electric cars are still unpopular.

This is despite subsidies on EVs are down by a substantial amount From Jan, 2019 compared to 2018.

BEV: Battery Electric Vehicle.
PHEV: Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle.
ICE: Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle.

Ami One
New Citroen EV concept could be driven without a licence

Citroën has unveiled a tiny city car concept ahead of its public debut at the Geneva motor show next month.

The Ami One is a two-seat show car that meets Europe’s quadricycle regulations. That means it’s less than 1.5m wide, has a top speed of 28mph and weighs less than 450kg. As a result, it could in some countries be driven without a driving licence.

The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive-screenshot_20190220143913_chrome.jpg

Quote:

“The young are connected to use, not ownership,” said Citroën’s senior vice-president of product and strategy, Xavier Peugeot. “To me, Ami One is not a car. There are people for who mobility is not an object.”

The Ami One is intended to be a vehicle whose use would be shared at least as much as it’s privately owned, so it is built simply and cheaply and to be tough.

What brought about the Ami One?

“Between 16 and 30 years old, nobody buys cars. So there’s a group who don’t buy cars but who still need to move. Concept cars have a role in the company to move us forwards. We asked ourselves questions with every part: do we need it, or what do we need?”

“Initially, it was going to be smaller. When you are surrounded by SUVs, you must feel confident. It’s not friendly. It’s not feminine. It’s robust, as a tool.

The Ami One won’t just be static at the Geneva show but will be driven around the stand.

"We will drive it as part of Autocar’s show video, which will go live on 5 March."
