When news of the GOP tax plan broke, there was plenty of talk that the plan to kill the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles would make the cars an even tougher sell among mainstream consumers. That may be true for some buyers, but electric vehicles may be facing issues that even an incentive may not solve.

EC is an EV model series of BAIC, a Chinese company having JV with many auto companies with Daimler AG being one of them.

Renault-Nissan is developing Kwid EV for China. It will be released there in 2019 for around $8000 (Rs 5.2 lakhs). After launching in China it will be released in India and Brazil.

Tesla just opened their large supercharger stations with lounge in US. They have 40 supercharger points with solar arrays on parking roofs. The first two stations are in California. One is in Kettleman City between Los Angeles and San Francisco and the other in Baker between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

From one of the pics above it looks as if the driver is sitting bang in the middle of the cabin. If that is the case then no issues where they export it, LHD or RHD market

Study shows that EVs are safe for heart patients , but think twice about getting in Tesla's latest creation – the second-generation Roadster – that was recently unveiled. With a claimed 0-60 mph time of less than two seconds, it's got racy performance figures that would surely turn the healthiest of drivers white with fright

The study used a group of 26 men and eight women, averaging 69 years of age between them and all implanted with a cardiac defibrillator, tested in a variety of positions around a Tesla Model S P90D as it was charged at a 220V charging station. The participants' defibrillators were monitored during the test for electromagnetic interference. The defibrillators were set to their most sensitive setting, and none sensed an electromagnetic signal, a charge, or any other interference from the car or charging station.

What cities are driving the electric vehicle revolution around the world?

Electric vehicle sales are increasing across almost all markets, but are still disproportionately concentrated in a small number of major markets.
The report identifies 20 cities that are responsible for a whopping 40% of electric vehicles. The ICCT names these 20 their electric vehicle capital cities.

Los Angeles leads the world with more than 100,000 cumulative electric vehicle sales.

China’s Shanghai and Beijing are not far behind LA. However, when looking at electric vehicle sales shares: “The Norwegian cities of Bergen and Oslo… [led with] 36% and 33% respectively.

Another key factor for the success of electric vehicles in these cities is access to EV charging infrastructure

So which city wins for EV charging infrastructure?

Norway and the Netherlands have the highest concentration of public charge points… [but importantly] cities in China have a much higher share of DC fast charge points, at 16%–45% of all public charge points.

Slightly OT

One of the major criticisms of using an EV is that the power source might still use fossil fuel for electricity generation. And the major issue with using renewables entirely is how to store the excess electricity generated and use it during periods when the energy source isn't there. For example we may face a situation of excess solar power generation during day time but left with no solar power during nights. Also another issue is wild fluctuations in the power. However, it was just a matter of time before the maverick Elon Musk changed that in a big way.

Tesla has installed a 100MW battery in South Australia as a power back up for summer. I believe, with better battery technology, we can entirely depend on renewables within a decade or so, provided there is a push from governments. A nation like India can actually have a reliable solar powered electricity 24X7, with proper storage of power.

The world’s largest lithium-ion battery, which is being built in South Australia by Tesla to store renewable energy, is about to enter final testing.

The premier, Jay Weatherill, said Elon Musk’s Tesla company had finished installing the battery powerpacks at Jamestown, in the state’s mid-north, where they are linked to an adjacent windfarm.

He said the 100-megawatt battery will now be energised and tested to ensure it meets all energy market and state government regulatory requirements.

I am glad that Gadkari has essentially scrapped an attempt to standardize the battery pack. He has essentially scrapped the idea of a field replaceable battery. Maybe the only way to control our babudom.

Zoomcar added 20 EVs to its lineup in Mysuru last week. This week they added another 20 to their line up in Hyderabad. All these are Mahindra e20plus vehicles. They are planning to add more EVs in Delhi and Chandigarh as well.
