I completely agree.

I have experienced driving a mid-sized petrol hybrid over 3,700 KM in plains/hilly terrain, with a fuel consumption of 24 KM/liter, a clear 50% more than an equivalent petrol/car. The battery lasts almost "forever". Prius owners whom I have met have said that they have been using the same battery for over 100,000 miles, 5+ years.

Smaller engines running at closer-to-optimum power settings (with boost from an electric motor when quick acceleration is needed), switched off in heavy traffic, no need for battery charging, indefinite range, 50%+ fuel savings - all these will reduce fuel imports and cut pollution (India's main goals), without expensive infrastructure all over the country.

Why don't we use this technology while waiting for batteries to become, cheaper, more durable and easier to dispose off, while charging infrastructure builds up? The public will readily adopt hybrids, and switch to full-electric when they become economically viable.

We are different from Europe. Long distances, poor infrastructure, etc. so I also feel than hybrids are the way to go. Unfortunately, following the odd-even all sorts of vehicles are being labelled and sold as hybrids. Define strict norms, and the open up on hybrids. This is the way to go - not only short term, bust possibly medium and long term as well.

Model 3 is the best selling electric/plug-in hybrid car in USA for Q1, 2018.

Here is how Model 3 sales compared to some popular EV, plug-in hybrid and ICE cars in Q1 (USA):
Tesla Model 3 (full EV): 8,180
Toyota Prius Prime (plug-in hybrid): 6,468
Chevy Bolt (full EV): 4,375
Chevy volt (plug-in hybrid): 3,478
Nissan Leaf (full EV): 2,545
Audi A4 (includes S4): 7,906
BMW 3-series (sedan, wagon, GT, M3): 13,651
Mercedes-Benz C-Class (sedan, coupe, convertible, AMG Cxx): 13,350

Tesla seems to be on track to surpass popular entry level luxury cars (sedans) from BMW and Mercedes in Q2, 2018.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Elon Musk taking Donald Trump to task on US-China car trade is starting to backfire as the Chinese government adds electric vehicles to the list of products that will be slapped with new tariffs.

China’s move comes just two days after the Trump administration released its own plan to impose tariffs on $50-billion in Chinese goods, including cars, after starting a trade war rhetoric between the two countries over the last few months.

Quote:
Tesla Inc. needs to brace for another setback after China included electric cars among American products that it's targeting with additional tariffs in its counter-punch to the U.S
Quote:
US auto stocks are falling this morning with Tesla leading the pack with the biggest tumble due to its lack of manufacturing in China and its current total reliance on imports
Quote:
Tesla sold 14,883 vehicles in China last year, accounting for just 3 percent of the nation's battery-powered electric-vehicle sales and placing it as the No. 10 brand in that segment. China accounted for 17 percent of Tesla's revenue for 2017

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

No licence needed for electric vehicle charging station.

Quote:
Setting up charging stations for electric vehicles does not need a separate licence under the Electricity Act of 2003, the government has said, giving a big boost to ambitious EV plans.

The clarification follows confusion over whether during charging of battery for use in electric vehicles, the charging station performs any activity of transmission, distribution or trading of electricity, which would require a license under the Act.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Germany overtakes Norway as Europe's top market for electrified cars

Quote:
Germany leapfrogged Norway as Europe's biggest market for electrified cars, a sign consumers are warming to the technology just as Volkswagen Group and Daimler ready models to take on Tesla.

Sales of electrified vehicles surged 70 percent in Germany to 17,574 cars in the first quarter, nudging ahead of Norway for the first time, according to data from European industry association ACEA. The figure includes full-electric cars such as Tesla's Model S, as well as plug-in hybrids such as the BMW 2-series Active Tourer.

VW, Daimler and BMW are retooling their assembly lines in response to stricter European regulations on combustion engines and fallout from the 2015 VW emissions-cheating scandal.

While consumers have turned away from diesel -- especially in Germany -- automakers are depending on customers to embrace electrified powertrains if they are to recover the massive investments they are making.

Across Europe, sales of electrified vehicles advanced 41 percent, with full-electric cars up 35 percent and plug-in hybrids up 47 percent, while diesel in the EU dropped 17 percent.

Germany, the region's biggest single market, has until now trailed Norway, which jumpstarted electrified sales with generous subsidies. Norway is Tesla's third-biggest market after the U.S. and China.

Once rare in Germany, Teslas have become increasingly common on the streets of cities such as Munich, alongside other fully-electric models like BMW's i3 and the Nissan Leaf.

Still, the California company ranked 31st in the country in 2017, well behind Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW and Audi, the country's dominant brands.

While the Germans have an advantage in Europe, their next challenge as the market for electrified vehicles expands will be to prove to consumers in the U.S. and China that their products are superior. Elon Musk's recent troubles with Model 3 production issues and quality reviews, may have opened a door.

"Tesla's golden age is nearing its end and it will become a product among many," said Juergen Pieper, a Frankfurt-based analyst with Bankhaus Metzler. "As the consumer pool for electric cars grows, tolerance over quality issues may be lower too as it's less about the early adopters who went for Teslas based on novelty."

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Looks like the Govt has re-started its push for Electric Vehicles with a 9000Cr proposal. According to the new proposal, EV passenger vehicles upto 15L will get an incentive of 2L for scrapping old car. Electric 2 wheelers upto 1.5 lakhs to get 30K incentive.

@Holyghost; The incentive will only apply to BS-II or earlier cars. So some mojo will be lost. Expect the Babus to lock down on some more options.

Car charging station to be set up every 3 km in India.

The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive-images.jpeg

To give a push to electric cars in India, the government has proposed to set up charging stations every three kilometres in cities with a million-plus population and smart cities. On the highways, the system will be installed every 50 km for the convenience of the road users.

A senior government official said in a statement,
Quote:
“It is expected that 30,000 slow-charging and 15,000 fast-charging stations will be required to be put up in a phase-wise manner in the next 3-5 years. There should be at least two high-charge points and one fast-charging point at every three kilometres in cities. Similarly, there should be electric vehicle charging station every 50 km on highways,”

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

Some interesting EV and battery related updates from Tesla shareholder meeting:
  • Tesla Model 3 production is now 350 cars per week. Will reach 5000 cars per week by end of this month (June). It is now best selling mid-size premium sedan in US ahead of Mercedes C-class, BMW 3 series.
  • Supercharger expansion – 9,969 total globally right now (actually 10,021 as per latest update). These are at 1,269 locations means ~8 chargers per location on average. Next gen supercharger design is mostly completed and enters production by end of the year. Supercharger expansion will be accelerated after next gen deploys.
  • Model Y will be unveiled in March 2019 and production in 2020.
  • Tesla semi truck and Roadster will have better specs than what was unveiled. Semi will have even higher range and roadster will have better performance.
  • Gigafactory is completed 1/3 now. It will be twice as big as the next largest building in the world once fully completed.
  • Close to announcing combined vehicle battery pack and power train in Shanghai, China. Holding discussions with various governments in China and its going to be next gen Tesla factory. Announcing all details really soon, as soon as next month. One more in Europe, announcement maybe end of this year
  • 1 GWh of storage deployed worldwide till now. Another GWh of storage will be deployed in less than a year. Rate of stationary storage growing exponentially. Each incremental year will be more than all of preceding year for a number of years.
  • With the current technology they expect 30% improvement without increasing size and weight in 2-3 years. Doubling of energy density will take 6-8 years.

For a country that is highly disorganized even when it comes to how cars are parked, I cannot see how this will play out with any semblance of sanity.

Re: The Electric Vehicle (EV) Landscape - A Deep Dive

So finally, the much talked about Tata Nano Electric by Jayem sees the daylight. Called the Jayem Neo, the car do not carry any Tata logo. Instead carries a Jayem logo. According to the article, it is powered by 17KW (23 BHP) motor. No info about the range or battery. And sadly, the initial deliveries are for Ola taxies only. Why is Tata so adamant that they will not sell their electric cars to normal public? First the Tigors, now the Nano.
