Government issues EV charger guidelines, existing EV users won't be able to use fast charge !




- Power distribution companies can facilitate setting up private charging at residences and offices.

-Setting up of public charging stations will not require any licence as long as it meets the technical and performance standards and the protocols

- The charging infrastructure can obtain electricity from any generation company through open access.

-the government's specification for fast charging includes CCS, CHAdeMO and Type-2 AC with Rated Voltage (V) being in the range of 200 to 1,000 V

- none of the EVs commercially sold in India till date can utilise the high power output as EVs in India are in the range of less than 100V.

-the fast-charging capabilities are future-ready but cannot be utilised by initial adopters of EVs in India

-pricing will be determined by the appropriate commission, provided "however that the tariff shall not exceed the average cost of supply plus 15 percent

- Battery swapping mentioned, but not yet detailed as it seems complex.

-Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore in Phase 1 of rollout 1- 3 years

a total of nine cities are shortlisted for Phase 1 (1-3 years) with a population of over 4 million as per Census 2011. All existing expressways connected to these cities and important highways connected with each of these will also be covered in the first phase.

The second phase, which will begin by 2021, will target big cities in state capitals. Union Territory headquarters shall be covered for distributed and demonstrate effect.

EVs are going to be mainstream and competing with ICE (petrol/diesel) models at all price points in China from 2019. They all come with good battery sizes (30+ KWh) and ranges (200+ kms). Below EV (ORA R1) is by Great Wall motors which is just released in China. Its size is between Alto and Kwid but has slightly larger wheelbase than Kwid. Its price starts at RMB 59,800 and high end comes for RMB79,800 after subsidies. High end variant comes with 6 air bags.









China forcing their battery and vehicle companies to improve technology for EVs. Earlier they used to provide subsidies for all plug-in hybrids and full-electric vehicles. From 2018, they limited subsidies for only hybrids with at least 50 KM of electric range and full-electric vehicles with at least 150 KMs of range. They also consider battery density for subsidy amount. Higher the range and battery density, higher the subsidy amount. From 2019, they are removing subsidies for hybrids (plug-in or not) and only subsidizing the full-electric vehicles with at least 200 KMs range. This will ensure the battery companies to improve their technology rapidly and also vehicle companies to go full electric.

Between, ORA is an EV exclusive brand by Great Wall Motors. They are also expected come to India over next 2-3 years.

Volkswagen gears up to lead the EV scene. In an EV scene it is not just the car, what about the charging infrastructure ?

Volkswagen just addresses that, presents the initial details on a mobile charging station that can be set up temporarily wherever the need for it arises.

The station developed by Volkswagen has a total battery storage capacity of up to 360 kWh and is said to be able to charge up to 15 vehicles before depletion, four of which simultaneously, two with DC and two with AC connections.

The technology used in it is of a quick-charge type, meaning the process of juicing up an average car last for about 17 minutes.

The biggest novelty this station brings to the industry is the fact that, if needed, it can be installed independently from any power supply. As soon as the energy levels in the station’s battery drop below 20 percent, it can be changed with a new, fully charged one.

The first batch of these stations will pop up in Volkswagen’s hometown of Wolfsburg as soon as next year as part of a pilot project. More areas are to follow in 2020.

Lexus to go EV... at last.

According to the trademark search at each intellectual property rights management institution in Europe, on December 11, 2018 (December 14th only in Switzerland), from Toyota Motor Corporation, Trademark applications have been made, and in some countries registration is done. However, it is unknown whether the similar application was made to the Japanese Patent Office because the search result is not displayed, but it seems that the LX 570 and others are registered as a character trademark even in the LEXUS series.

2019, motor show such as Geneva Motor Show in May, Frankfurt Motor Show in September, Tokyo Motor Show in October, UX 300e may be released at the timing.

I don't even see I pace on the November chart, or YTD sales. Are they looking at the sales a week after launch and comparing that to a car that has been in the market for years?

That chart lists Top-20 cars by YTD sales and their November 2018 sales. The I-pace has been on sale for less than half the year and quite probably has not sold enough units to be in Top-20 YTD sales-wise. But it could still be outselling cars in the Top-20 list in monthly sales during October-December in the markets where it has been launched (here and here).

Tesla is the most direct competitor to the I-pace. So, comparisons are inevitable.

That said, the I-pace seems to be a less efficient car that the Model-S/X based on reviews. So, even if I-pace is doing better in the first few months of its sales, it remains to be seen if it can maintain the sales momentum.

Some highlights:

• In Q4, Tesla produced 86,555 vehicles, which is almost 1,000 vehicles per day.

• More than three quarters of Model 3 orders in Q4 came from new customers, rather than reservation holders.

• International deliveries in Europe and China will start in February 2019. Expansion of Model 3 sales to other markets, including with a right-hand drive variant, will occur later in 2019.

• 2018 was the first time in decades that an American car – the Model 3 – was the best-selling premium vehicle in U.S. for the full year, with U.S. sales of Model 3 roughly double those of the runner up.

• Tesla delivered almost as many vehicles in 2018 as we did in all prior years combined.

Tesla also reduced the price of all of their cars by $2,000. Tax incentives for Tesla cars will come down by $3,750 from Jan 1, 2019 to June 30th, 2019. So, this price reduction will partially address that.

Finally some movement in the right direction. Many people will definitely look at EVs for their next/ main vehicle - if - this is implemented as a part of a cohesive long term plan.

BHEL said it will design, engineer, manufacture, supply and instal the EV charging stations along with a central monitoring system.

Each SEVC charging station will be equipped with a rooftop solar power plant to supply green energy to fast and slow chargers planned to be installed at the location.

Can a modest solar panel array power fast chargers (typically 100kWh IIRC)?
