Default Maharashtra might waive off taxes on Electric vehicles

This is just out:- In a welcome move, Govt announced its commitment towards waiver on taxes for electric vehicles in Maharashtra. Now it remains to be seen when it materializes. This means no VAT, No Road tax and no registration cost. This could bring down the cost of electric cars by 1 Lakh+.

If other states follow, this will be a HUGE shot in the arm to the cause of electric vehicles. Not so much the E2O, but definitely future products. Maharashtra could go a step further and incentivize hybrid vehicles too. Hybrids deliver maximum benefits / fuel efficiency in exactly the kind of stop-and-go traffic that we have in Mumbai.

Why not the E2O? It costs 7 lakhs on the road in Mumbai! A lakh off will have a marginal effect on its sales.

If anyone was curious about the E2O's sales figures, here goes:

Quote:
"We are selling around 8 to 10 electric cars in Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra. Across the country, the company sells 75 Reva cars a month. We can ramp up production of electric cars to 2,500 a month," said Mahindra and Mahindra executive director Pawan Goenka.

The govt really needs to step up the incentives on Hybrid cars. Currently there are some incentives but not enough to encourage people to make the switch. Waiving off road tax, road tax would be an excellent move for Hybrid cars too. Electric are just too limited at the moment to gain much from this. Unless ofcourse CBU's are included then we could see Tesla's coming in in a big way.

Charging is one of the principal issues to be addressed in tier-1 cities as one cannot find parking next to the apartment (ground floor owners) while for multistory apartments, the problem is even bigger unless something can be done by the RWA to create separate parking lot for electric cars with metered charging points. I am trying for it in my society, lets hope things move.
