Mercedes-Benz is looking to get more serious about its electric vehicle ambitions. It is expected to introduce 4 new EVs, with the first launch taking place in 2018. The product offensive was expected to begin with the introduction of a large crossover, but it will now begin with a sedan that will slot in between the C-Class and E-Class.

In the first phase of production, the electric sedan will be followed by a new mid-sized crossover that will be placed between the GLC and GLE-Class SUVs. In the second phase of production, the range will include an S-Class-sized luxury sedan and a crossover that may be even larger than the gargantuan GLS-Class SUV.

All the cars will be based on the German automaker's electrical vehicle architecture (dubbed EVA), which borrows design elements such as the suspension and basic body structure from the company's rear-drive MRA platform. According to the report by CAR Magazine, these EVA-based Mercedes-Benz zero emission vehicles will incorporate a monolithic battery pack, which fills almost the entire floor-pan.

The battery pack is said to tip the scales at around 400 kg with a 300 kW (around 400 BHP) unit powering rear-wheel drive variants. In all-wheel drive variants, an additional motor rated at either 90 kW (around 120 BHP) or 150 kW (around 200 BHP) will be used to power the front wheels.

Initial plans to build these cars at an all-new factory have been scrapped, with production now expected to take place at the company's Bremen plant in Northern Germany. Mercedes-Benz reportedly aims to sell around 20,000 units of each body style annually, with prices expected to hover in the range of £70-80,000 (Rs. 68.85 - 78.70 lakh approximately).

The company is also planning to launch an entry-level electric vehicle that will be built and sold in the Chinese car market around 2020.

I'm curious how this plays out. I really like how BMW has entered the market with their i series; I drove the i3 in California and was blown away by the product.

Mercedes-Benz is planning its own distinct line of electric vehicles, challenging BMW and Tesla Motors Inc. in a bet that alternative-fuel cars have the potential to become profitable - Plans to create an entire sub-brand of electric cars.

The first of the new electric autos will be produced at the company’s factory in Bremen, Germany. From next year, the Bremen plant will also build a fuel-cell electric version of the GLC SUV that can be charged both with hydrogen and at a wall socket.

The prototype set to be introduced in September will be an SUV capable of driving about 500 kilometers (310) miles on a single charge. It will also show the distinct design Mercedes has developed to set its electric cars apart.

Mercedes has registered a series of EQ model names as it gears up to launch its MEQ sub-brand into the electric car market.
Mercedes’ forthcoming range of pure-electric vehicles is likely to be called ‘EQ'.

Quote:

recent trademark applications suggest that Mercedes is lining up a range of vehicles that will carry the ‘EQ’ prefix in their names - and that they’re likely to exist under a more conventional sub-brand called MEQ. The firm has asked to register everything from EQA and EQB through to EQX. It has also applied to register slogans including ‘EQ inside’, ‘EQ boost’ and ‘Generation MEQ’; these would probably be used in the firm’s marketing material for the new range of vehicles.

Power comes from a pair of electric motors that produce up to a combined 402hp and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque, thanks to the system’s scalable battery components, with the power transmitted to all four wheels permanently.

The company claims a driving range of up to 310 miles (500km) on a single charge with the battery pack mounted between the axles. Speaking of which, the lithium-ion batteries are made from Daimler themselves, with a model-specific total capacity of over 70kWh. 0-62mph (0-100km/h) comes in under 5 seconds.
Quote:

As is now, Mercedes’ electric crossover is capable of wireless, traditional and fast charging. In the medium to long term when a charging capacity of 300kW is planned to be introduced, the company says that five minutes of charge will give their vehicle sufficient power for 100km (62 miles) of driving range.

Just to spice up the market and to show technology upper hand, MB will be launching a GLC based SUV with Fuel cell.

It is interesting to note that, it gives almost as much as range as an EV car with 0% carbon footprint.

Also the fuel cells were developed along with Ford and Nissan initially, but in later stages Nissan pulled out of partnership, which may have resulted in escalation of cost of part development due to one less partner.

It's frustrating and disappointing to know when one part of world is getting access to latest technological advancement for better living, where as we are still on the way to implement basic safety & emission norms.
