The Volkswagen ID.3 electric car with a 550 km range

Volkswagen is looking for an image change moving away from the Dieselgate case and completely change its product strategy and focusing more on EV's.

Quote:
VW Group CEO Matthias Müller has confirmed that Volkswagen’s leading engineers have been challenged to create an electric car that can be as iconic as the Golf, offering a 500km (310 mile) range, a charge time of 15 minutes and costing less than a conventionally engined car.

Quote:
The hand-picked team of engineers is currently defining the packaging of the new zero-emissions model, which is understood to be around 4400mm in length. That compares with the Golf’s 4255mm and suggests that it will fight for sales in the same segment while offering a unique powertrain, interior environment and look.
The dedicated electric car will be the first to use the Volkswagen Group’s new MEB architecture, which has been developed specifically for electric cars.

Quote:
Changes compared with current car design are said to focus on the opportunity to have a far more spacious interior in a car with a much smaller footprint, greater agility and greater connectivity opportunities. In addition, Volkswagen has targeted a significant growth in electric range through the use of compact electric motors and high-performance batteries.
Müller has previously confirmed that there will be 20 electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles in the VW Group’s range by 2020.

Now, with such innovations, EVs can actually take the front row - 15 mins charging time and 500 km range is something one would really want.
Think about it - if charging stations are available here and there, one could actually cover long distances in an EV. Consider this: Distance between Chennai & Bangalore = 350 km. If the country has enough charging stations in towns & cities, one could actually do a road trip in such cars!
In my opinion, even before we speak about self-driven cars, the research and widespread use of EVs should take precedence (Less moving parts = much more easier and reliable to be driven by a computer)
If VW floods the market with EVs in 2020 (or even 2025) we can expect similar stuff to start happening in our market too.

Volkswagen might be switching the track on its priorities by routing much more resources towards the development of electric vehicles. The company’s executive board looks likely to approve the plan.

VW Reportedly Plans to Build Its Own Multi-Billion-Euro Battery Gigafactory.

Quote:
The factory would allow VW to operate independently of Asian firms like Panasonic, LG and Samsung that have dominated the battery market to date.

Building a new battery factory would also allow VW to take a leadership role in the development of the new technology

Volkswagen weighs second EV platform.

The MEB platform will be able to handle everything from a small Polo to a Passat-sized car, models that make up the overwhelming bulk of VW's volume

Quote:
Volkswagen is examining whether its modular architecture for electric cars under development, dubbed MEB, is flexible enough for a top-of-the-line Phaeton, or whether a second groupwide platform is needed.
Quote:
We're examining right now whether it can go all the way to a C-segment" between Passat and Phaeton,

Quote:
The next two VW Group electric vehicles, Porsche's Mission E and the Audi e-tron quattro, however, were both announced before the group's decision to develop the MEB. As such each is being built on its own platform. Only the BUDD-e concept shown at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been built off a forerunner of the MEB.
Electric cars no longer need to be as large as their combustion-powered siblings.

"Remember that by removing the center tunnel you can increase the roominess of the interior without changing the dimensions of the car

it's possible to build a D-segment luxury car like the Phaeton in a C-segment size.

VW shifts focus to EV inline with Germany going all EV by 2030.

Volkswagen Group will introduce more than 30 electric vehicles by 2025, accounting for up to one-quarter of its unit sales, as it recasts itself to emerge from the diesel emissions-cheating scandal.

The automaker will transform its core business and realign its components production as part of a sweeping strategy review,

VW Group’s new growth strategy: To be world’s leading provider of sustainable mobility.

The Volkswagen Group is laying the foundations for lasting success in tomorrow's world of mobility and its evolution into a world-leading provider of sustainable mobility.

Quote:
As regards vehicles, and drivetrains, special emphasis will be placed on e-mobility. The Group is planning a broad-based initiative in this area: it plans to launch more than 30 purely battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) over the next 10 years. It estimates that such vehicles could then account for around a quarter of the global passenger car market. The Volkswagen Group forecasts that its own BEV sales will be between two and three million units in 2025, equivalent to some 20 to 25 percent of the total unit sales expected at that time.

VAG to focus on EV.

Now Skoda plans for its first EV for launch in 2020, based on VW's MEB Platform.

Why a standalone design?

Quote:
It's easier to package something that was designed specifically to be an electric car. And electric cars will be more expensive [than petrols and diesels] for the foreseeable future, so it makes sense to produce a more premium model like an SUV.
Plans for more electric models, for example of the Fabia and Octavia whose replacements are farther in the future, are likely to firm up in coming years.

re: The Volkswagen ID.3 electric car with a 550 km range

VW will preview a pre-series EV that will launch in late 2018/early 2019.

A compact vehicle with the external dimensions of a VW Golf and the space of a VW Passat makes the beginning - the prototype near-series is presented to the end of September at the Paris Motor Show and come end of 2018, early 2019 in the trade. Diess promises a range between 400 and 600 kilometers on one charge.

On the same platform and the same battery technique little later also a city SUV, a Coupé, a small van will (the study shown in January gave a taste of BUDD-e on it) as well as a prestige sedan follow - the latter as the successor of the VW Phaeton.

In the Group -
Quote:
VW’s premium brand Audi has already announced it will launch a production version of the e-tron quattro concept in 2018. Likely to be called ‘Q6,’ the all-electric SUV is going to be built in Brussels, Belgium and will offer a maximum range in excess of 311 miles (500 kilometers). An official reveal of the production model will occur in the second half of 2017 and the model is expected to retain the concept’s three electric motors.

Volkswagen EV hatchback to be precursor of future electric models.

2019 Volkswagen electric hatchback will be 'a mobile device on wheels. A 24-hour internet connection will give VW's new EV a permanent link to the digital ecosystem.
The Volkswagen ID.3 electric car with a 550 km range-news31st074.jpg

Following the unveiling of the new EV concept in Paris, VW plans to make public other new zero-emission models. These include the further-advanced version of the Budd-e, which is billed by insiders as a modern-day Microbus, along with an all-electric successor to its flagship Phaeton (known internally as the X-BEV), a high-riding crossover (currently called CUV-e) and a sports car in the form of either a coupé or a roadster.
Quote:
The five-seat concept is described by Diess as being slightly smaller than a Golf but with interior space comparable to that of a Passat and an electric range of 400-600km (250-370 miles). That is roughly double the reach of the recently upgraded BMW i3, which will rival VW’s production model.
Quote:
The concept, which is undergoing construction at the company’s engineering headquarters with the working title Nuv-e (New Urban Vehicle Electric), is set to preview VW’s new modular electric architecture (MEB) platform in detail. It will use scalable electric motors, axles and suspension to allow for models ranging from the supermini to luxury segments
Quote:
the hatchback will be the second stand-alone electric model to be on global sale in 2020
Quote:
At the conference a slide was flashed up indicating where VW’s range of new EV’s would sit against rivals. A minimum range of 400km (248 miles) appears to be what VW is targeting. This is likely to be for small A and B segment cars, while the ‘scalable’ range tops out at 600km (372 miles). VW also confirmed EVs would be developed for ‘big growing segments’ indicating that the 600km range is likely to be reserved for SUVs that can accommodate the larger battery.

re: The Volkswagen ID.3 electric car with a 550 km range

Volkswagen has now teaser images of its EV to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show.

The Volkswagen ID.3 electric car with a 550 km range-v3.jpg

1. The model, which has been scheduled for release in 2019, will be capable of travelling between 250 and 300 miles on a single charge, with charging only taking 15 minutes.

2.A range of 250 miles is adequate for everyday use. The car will also use a conventional mainly steel body. Construction will be the same as today.

3.The EV will be a similar size to the brand's Golf hatchback, but the benefits of the packaging of electric vehicles mean that interior space is set to rival that of the larger Passat.

4.We know that the car will be packed with technology, including a 24-hour internet connection and a continuous link to a Volkswagen app store. A 'Volkswagen ID' will be specific to every driver, with their preferences and settings saved and applied to other cars, such as hire cars, that the driver may use.

5.The model will be the second of five electric Volkswagen electric vehicles, all developed as the brand looks to move away from fossil fuels .
The follow-up models to the hatchback will be a crossover, a luxury saloon and a sports car. An MPV will come before the hatchback and will most likely be a production version of the Budd-e concept.

6.Volkswagen's target is to be selling one million fully electric vehicles by 2025.
