They're saying that it is due to micro fractures from the ball throw tests done a day before the launch.

There's a post from someone on reddit who claims to have spoken to the person/designer in charge.

Tesla CyberTruck pulling the Ford F150, was a gimmick & only proves that the CyberTruck is seriously heavy. That is ALL that it proves.

Here's a video by Engineering Explained that breaks it down :

Ford has challenged Tesla for Round 2 & Elon Musk has accepted it. I'm rooting for Ford.

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

There is no way ford is going to win this. The only ford truck that will have a chance is the F-350, that to because it has 4 tires in the rear axle. The electric will always win in a Tug of war due to the torque.

There is a reason modern diesel trains use the engine just to generate electricity, the electric motor is the one which does the pulling. Same goes to ships and submarines powered by fossil fuels.

When you see videos of even a Model X (with stock tires), sometimes winning against a much heavier H2 hummer with wider tires, ford is seriously out gunned.

A F-150 prototype electric would be a fair comparison but Tesla owing to its industry leading power train should also have that one in the bag.

But because no one knows the specs of the Electric F-150 and Tesla would need to build the 3 motor version to be safe and since they haven't built any other Cybertruck apart from the one which has 2 motors. I don't think we will see F-150 electric vs cyber truck anytime soon.

Ford is stupid to take Elon musk in re-match at this time. It's going to back fire. Ford Mach-E got about 15k+ reservations in about 10 days. Tesla cybertruck got 200K+ reservations in 3 days.

Sorry for going OT. You are right about trains. But ships with ICE engines don't use electric motors for propulsion, majority of them are direct drive. Submarines use battery-electric motor combo because it cant run ICE engines while under water and not because of any lack of torque.

True for diesel submarines, my point was modern ships rolling out, like cruise ships, tankers use electric motor. Torque may not be important for these applications but it is for efficiency.

Even in RC scale boats, cars, helicopters brushless electric motors have just destroyed the nitro engine crowd. No competition to the instant torque.

Going by posts on reddit it seems that Ford has said their VP's tweet was tongue in cheek which would mean they're backtracking because this is unwinnable. A normal ICE F150 vs the Tesla will end up showing EVs are better than ICEs from standstill so it's good that they retracted. But apparently Musk is going ahead with a test next week anyway (they can outright buy a F150 and do the test, no need for Ford to supply one)

A few thoughts on the unfairness of the Tesla video though :
1. It was an unequal match up. The cybertruck is AWD while they chose a base F150 2WD, that too with an empty bed
2. If you see the video closely you can see the tyres of the Ford spinning, the driver didn't get a chance to move it to gear

I'd love it if Ford sent their F150 EV prototype (which towed 1 million pounds in their demo video) to take on the Tesla. That'd be a real battle to savor!

Kiddish, so these are people who design our future cars

There are better tug of war videos in aplenty desi YouTube channels such as
this

and this

Tug of war is a very crude demonstration of might. It’s about low end torque to weight ratio where EV would win hands down albeit heavy. To make things worse, there is a first mover advantage in any tug of war, because the opposite team’s force has to be more than the already built momentum. Tesla was clearly seen moving before F-150, given the heaviness of momentum, poor Ford stands zero chance. If the first mover was Ford, perhaps there was a chance. It could have also benefitted Ford from another perspective; better torque from rpm.

Given the kind of uncertainties in tug of war, they should rather show their might on pukka tracks.

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

The battle is heating up after the video. Ford exec Sunny Madra replied to Elon that he would like to do apples to apples test of this. Elon replied "Bring it on" and says will be done next week.

The current video is seriously exaggerated. You can see they got a F-150 base spec which was RWD and hence no weight on the driven wheels. Forget Cybertruck, even a model 3 base spec might have been able to pull that Ford.

They should have shown the video with the Cybertruck pulling a fully loaded 4WD, 3.5L Ecoboost F-150 with a loaded bed. Now that would have demolished Ford.

The design is inexplicable. I like it simply for being inexplicable!

Musk should tie up with Mojang / Microsoft Studios for the marketing campaign of this truck. Why? Because these are the publishers for MINECRAFT. The Cybertruck can fit very well as it is, in the MINECRAFT world!! No modifications needed.

Re: Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!

US car giant Ford has withdrawn its challenge to a rematch less than 24 hours after Tesla boss Elon Musk said “bring it on”.

Ford issued an official statement dismissing the challenge as“tongue in cheek to point out the absurdity of Tesla’s video, nothing more”.

The contraption looks like an amateur low polygon render. It is hideous. I have been and always will be a Tesla fanboy, but this hurts my eyes. I want to like it but cannot find a single redeemable good looks angle. Maybe it will grow on me.

According to Elon Musk, as of November 26, 2019, Tesla has received 2,50,000 bookings for the Cybertruck.

Tesla pick-up truck plans confirmed EDIT: 'Cybertruck' unveiled!-tesla-cybertruck.jpg

Out of these 1,46,000 bookings were received in less than 48 hours. 17% of these bookings are said to be for the single motor variant, while 42% and 41% are said to be for the dual and triple motor variants respectively. Musk has said that there have been no advertisements or paid endorsements for the vehicle.

The top-spec Cybertruck is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. Depending on the variant, it offers a maximum range of 402-805 km on a single charge. The Cybertruck starts at US$ 39,900 for the base variant and US$ 69,900 for the top-spec tri-motor version.
