Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | ![]() Volkswagen CEO: ‘Anything You [Tesla] Can Do, We Can Do Better’ ![]() Volkswagen Group ranks among the largest automakers in the world, and for this reason, the company believes it has the resources to leave Tesla in the dust. VW is comprised of a myriad of companies, all of which will move to electrification, and all of which can share architecture, components, and assembly. The automaker won’t truly break into the EV market until 2019 or 2020, but plans to sell one million EVs by 2025 - that is 5 years behind Tesla's plan. VW Group has shown numerous electric concept cars from its Volkswagen and Audi brands; the first to enter production will be the 2019 Audi e-tron, an all-electric crossover utility vehicle Audi is getting serious about its portfolio of battery-electric models and is set to launch three electric vehicles over the next three years. There will be two mid-size crossover models and a more compact premium car 1.Audi’s e-Tron Quattro: ![]() Will hit the market in late 2018 as the company’s first model in its next-generation fleet of all-electric vehicles. The base model is likely to be priced starting at around $60,000. 2.Audi e-tron Quattro Sportback: ![]() Shown as a concept at the Shanghai Motor show, this is a sportback version of the above, with the interiors being cleverly differentiated from the e-tron Quattro. Pricing of the Sportback will be slightly above that of the regular model, carrying a premium of about $5000. It will appear on global markets in 2019 3.Audi e-tron premium compact ( Rival to Tesla Model 3): ![]() This as-yet-unnamed premium compact car will be slightly bigger than the A3 sedan, and it will be the first Audi based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric (MEB) architecture. It’s fitted with two electric motors, one up front and one in the rear; power output in top configuration will be around 300 horsepower, but there will likely be lesser entry-level configurations. A range of around 300 miles is a given. When it comes to market in late 2019 as a 2020 model, we expect an entry price point of less than $50K; it will directly target the Tesla Model 3 (if Tesla manages to get it to market by then). Will look like a variation between the Volkswagen I.D. Crozz and the Škoda Vision E. Link1 Link2 Last edited by volkman10 : 12th May 2017 at 08:26. |

| ![]() VW have the wherewithal to take on the competition. However, remember Tesla have been in the game for some time, which for VW it will be the first venture. I think it may take a generation or two for EVs to mature. |

Audi has confirmed it will build an electrified four-door GT car from 2020, expanding its forthcoming electric portfolio to three models. Called the Audi e-tron Gran Turismo, the all-new EV will join the upcoming e-tron and e-tron Sportback early in the coming decade. ![]() Link |

Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | ![]() Audi e-tron Electric SUV Starting Price Revealed, would rival Tesla Model X. The car is set to enter production at Audi’s carbon-neutral plant in Brussels in the next few months in order for deliveries to start in the European market at the end of 2018. Bookings open and gets ~ 3000 from Norway. Though smaller in size than the Model X, Audi will rely on its brand pull for garnering volumes. Starting at a price of €80,000 in Germany (~ $98,535 in US) it undercuts the Model X ( 75D) . Tesla's Model X starts off at $110,200 ( not considering Tesla's fuel savings calculation) ![]() Quote:

Infractions: 0/1 (4) | ![]() One gets to see how archaic VW's highly celebrated 'R&D' prowess is with it's recent EV designs! Time and again people have questioned what VW's massive research spend actually equates to in the real world, they spend more on R&D than Apple, Google, Tesla etc..... but the results simply show how inefficient they are and how short sighted their platforms are. I know Audi posts massive profits every year but one needs to wonder wht the VW brand continues to underwirte the losses. So setting aside the accounting discrepancies let us take a closer look at the recent EVs. For a company with such 'R&D' expertise, why have such long massive bonnets for? The biggest advantage of designing an EV is that they do not have to worry about the 150-200 kgs of engine in front of the car. The package is highly flexible with battrey packed under the car for low centre of gravity and the power trains pushed to either end, creating massive space in the middle. Why exactly does VW have long bonnets? Well because they still rely on the IC engined platforms for their EV's? They cannot do a cab forward on the E tron suv because it used the same MQB platforms used on a diesel touareg! So does this mean lower costs, no it is as pricey as a tesla or an upcoming iPace! What VW really reminds you of today is the American big 3 of the early 80s. Massive organizations that were completely blindfolded by their sheer ineptness in thinking forward. |
