Tata Power launches electric vehicle charging point in Mumbai

Tata Power has installed their first electric vehicle charging station in Mumbai. The charging point has been setup at the Tata Power Receiving Station in Vikhroli.

The new charging station is expected to facilitate electric car users in the city and is seen as the first step towards setting up a diverse charging infrastructure in India. Over the coming years, the company aims to build a network of charging stations so that more people adopt EVs and help achieve the government's target to replace all existing vehicles with electric cars by 2030. They have taken this initiative of providing charging stations along with Mass - Tech Controls. Apart from charging the batteries of the various electric vehicles, these chargers will also monitor the status of the batteries and the units consumed.

Tata Power is set to expand it charging infrastructure to other locations in Mumbai and is currently in talks with various stakeholders.

A wonderful first step. I hope it is a first of a long walk ahead.

Should be a good nudge for Tata Motors also to try and make a basic Nano based electric city runabout. Perhaps with ABS panels rather than steel of course. But NANO makes a wonderful platform for a city-EV IMO. Another way to realize a revised version of Ratan Tata's failed "car for everyone" vision with the Nano.

Well said. Trust Tata to start working on the infrastructure before bringing out an EV.

Nano has a very high roof, so it should still have acceptable headroom even if they raise the seats and use a few inches of the floor for batteries. Boot space wouldn't be affected, and neither would the centre of gravity.

Far simpler in my uneducated mind than it actually will be though, I'm sure

Thanks! This really should prick like a rusty old nail to anyone in Tata Motors. All those cars being charged are from MAHINDRA-Reva.

Trust the press release to contain pages full of high sounding words without the exact name of the charger installed. Mahindra themselves don't mention the specifications of their Quick2Charge fast DC charger, and neither have Tata bothered to mention it.

Curious if the tech experts know about the compatibility of this DC charger with other battery electric cars that may be introduced in India in the future? They only mention Nissan Leaf.

I live in Vikhroli!!! I'm so damn happy. I see this charging point on the Eastern Express Highway while heading home. Looks damn great with all the inviting banners and stuff.

Re: Tata Power launches electric vehicle charging point in Mumbai

How long does it take for a battery to be charged fully?
Does the owner need to stand around and wait for the process to complete?
Leaving the car, while charging, would not be advisable since there can be miscreants who can swap the charge and plug into their car?

We as a country are far away from the self-service mode, atleast for now.

Re: Tata Power launches electric vehicle charging point in Mumbai

A Big Thank you to Tata Power for taking this initiative. Its a very important first step in promoting the use of electric vehicles in the city of Bombay/Mumbai.

Now, I hope the cost of batteries comes down to more reasonable limits, the last time I checked, changing all the batteries on the new Mahindra reva was over 3.5 lacs. This cost every 3-4 years means that its an absolutely impractical idea. M&M folks themselves acknowledged that sales of these EV's are in single digits.

An electric Nano sounds like a good idea, but the hybrid Camry seems a much better bet due to the longer range, sheer driving pleasure, practical range. OF course the high ticket price is a problem, but I hope we get to see EV's at both ends of the spectrum rather than only the cheap ones.

Once again, great to see Tata Power rolling out the infra to make EV's possible. Thank you once again.

Just like Tesla! Tesla's charging infrastructure is a big USP, now that everyone else is in the process of rolling out EVs in the USA.

Yeah man! The Nano would be the perfect platform for an electric powertrain. Question is, it'll be a risky bet. Would Tata do it in the challenging circumstances it finds itself in currently? And would it want to invest anymore money in the Nano project which has pretty much been written off?

Oh so true...There is really little chance that they are even thinking of something like this. And its going to be a big mistake for TML in the long run. No serious attention to EVs. They have played with some prototypes of Indicas in the past on battery but technology has moved on and EVs have become household possibility now.

Mahindra has leapfrogged many in this by snapping up REVA. Tata is only worried about their Safari not selling against the Scorpio. The real ace up M&M's sleeve is their EV business which will have a significant amount of INDIA specific experience by next decade when EVs will really be a mass market mode of transport by the looks of it.

Coming back to the topic, is this Tata power initiative of charging points really going to pick up with some tie up with government etc? Or its more of a PR stunt? The charging stations is an Achilles' heal for EVs in India really. Nobody will think of investing in the large area required for proper high volume charging stations. Once the cars are in numbers, these will be required in high availability - but the cost of infrastructure involved will mostly drive up the charging cost prohibitively.
Maintaining these stations properly and as a long standing infrastructure will be a challenge in a country like our's.

That was indeed a smart move if they are able to continue developing the technology.

Currently a PR exercise, nothing else.

Well said! More than anything, the cost of land in urban India is prohibitively expensive. And it's not like there are empty spots available for EV stations either. Now, this is a challenge as over 90% of India parks its cars on the road, thus EV charging infrastructure is going to have to be carefully thought out.

1. The best place to start is the existing network of petrol pumps. Since nearly all petrol-pumps are single storey outlets, solar panels on their roofs should be mandatory.

2. Chargers placed on footpaths, aside street parking spots (just like the parking meters we see abroad).

3. Chargers at all parking lots & complexes.

Good. I only hope there is some standardization regarding connector, voltage etc. Otherwise it will become a nightmare.

It seems things are moving for EV charging setup.

There was a small news about Reliance planning to setup EV chargers in their fuel bunks. Link

If BP straightaway jumps into EV charging mode in their upcoming 3500 fuel stations, nothing like that.

Then there is our PSU NTPC seeking license to setup charging stations nationwide. Link
