Currently, there is a big debate in India about which technology to invest more in: fully-electric or hybrids. India is likely to follow the Japanese case, which has focused more on hybrids following the leading position of Toyota. As Suzuki is the biggest player in India (45% market share) and is developing hybrids instead of electric cars, the coming benefits designed by the government could be focused on hybrids. This is even more probable if the ties between Toyota and Suzuki get stronger.

WagonR EV in 2020 will be Maruti’s first electric car.

WagonR EV will be the first electric car to be launched by the company, in 2020. It will most likely be manufactured at Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat as the battery manufacturing facility of the partnership among Suzuki, Toshiba and Denso (a Toyota Company) is also coming up there

I think instead of an all and all out electric car they (Toyota Suzuki) should at first bring hybrids with a small gasoline engine at the front and a battery pack at the back and then gradually move on to full electric cars as infrastructure for the same is made available slowly.

I doubt if we have the necessary hardware to charge and run car batteries. With dearth of parking space in congested cities like Mumbai how on earth would we get space to install charging points to plug the cars. What may happen is that due to the space constraint electric cars may get more popular in small town and cities where parking space is adequate and not an issue. However for cities like Mumbai I see huge challenges.

I guess everyone wants plug-in hybrids. For people doing short distances it will be useful and also provide the flexibility. But mostly these will be small cars and not sure if that complexity is acceptable to car makers.
Any electric or hybrid that also satisfies the performance aspect would be a long way away in India owing to the cost.

Maruti Suzuki to begin testing 50 prototype EVs in India - to start in October 2018. Seeks govt support for EV charging infra; hybrid vehicles.

The prototype, however, will not necessarily be the models coming to India but Mr.Suzuki said that the company is working on safe and easy-to-use EVs for its customers.

Apart from pure electric vehicles, a range of hybrid options are also likely to be shared between Toyota and Suzuki including the Baleno, Vitara Brezza and Corolla.

I am pleased to announce today that we will start road-testing 50 EV prototypes from next month in line with local climate and road condition. We have decided to commence production of lithium ion battery in 2020 at our plant in Gujarat. We will also launch an EV in India by 2020 in association with Toyota Motor Corp. EV penetration cannot be done without setting up of charging stations in India. There is also a need to develop hybrid and CNG vehicles besides EVs

We look forward to proactive leadership from the Indian government. There are many people looking to buy their first vehicle. The target for vehicle electrification is 30 percent by 2030, which means a huge population of vehicles will still be non-EVs. In order to realise sustainable mobility, other issues also need to be addressed and we would like to make efforts to resolve all these issues

Just saw Suzuki Wagon R (or that's what it is called widely by media) Electric prototype in Gurgaon, around cybercity. Posting pics- apologies for the poor quality pictures since there were taken while I was sitting in a moving cab.

The design looks very contemporary though, at least to me.

Toyota is looking at self-charging EVs as future of mobility in India.

Newer areas within the existing technology such as self-charging and range extender are also being explored in addition to the traditional hybrid and fully electric versions.

Its cooperation agreement with Suzuki Motor Corporation for sharing of vehicles and joint development of technologies is a step towards introducing the self-charging electric vehicle in India

Powertrain solution like self-charging electric vehicles will offer a more viable option, being a relevant technology from the emission point of view with Euro 6 (BS-VI) norm coming up by 2020

Toyota will upgrade Corolla, Yaris, Etios and Etios Liva yo meet BS VI norms.
