Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

I wonder if this was the true calling of the Nano.

But why is it called Neo? Is it an aftermarket kit? If they somehow shoehorn in a 25kWh battery in their, it would be awesome. But then it might not make financial sense for people looking for an affordable electric car.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

If this project is still under scope, Man this would be the perfect solution to E-mobility , keeping the city commutes in consideration.

Why is TATA logo replaced as Neo ? Some new trademark registered under TATA ? Or are they gonna introduce their EV models under a different sub-brand ? Or may be this is some random project experiment which will never make into showrooms!

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Is it Jayem using leftover Nano bodies?
Or they retrofitting to existing Nanos?

Hope they launch it to private buyers priced below 4-5 lakhs.

Can't think of a better local runabout.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

A Nano with even 100 km range under 5 lakh would be a great value proposition. But it needs to be backed by Tata. A Jayem Neo is no different than a Reva. With M&M vacating the E20 space, there is a real opportunity if it comes under Tata brand.

In reality though, I think this effort will fade into oblivion like the previous Jayem ventures.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Very Interesting development!
If at all Jayem has to sell this to the general public they should make it on line with the Tata Nano Europa; i.e. Slightly longer wheelbase, airbags, a good infotainment system and standard safety features. Every effort should be made it to appeal to the middle class urban/semi-urban buyer.

This is an exciting news ! The battery pack & technology sounds similar to what the Tigor EV was offering at the beginning at 9.xx lakhs for commercial use .

It may come as a commercial vehicle which doesn't require airbags as standard , hoping that they have strengthened the structure compared to the original one.

IMHO every car under 3 star rating should have speed limit similar to this .

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Unless the Neo is being released as a quadricycle, it will have to pass the Indian crash test norms and have 2 airbags.

I am not too worried about the crash test, I remember Tata reworking on the body shell after the GNCAP crash test, and launching the GenX with considerably increased gross vehicle weight (GVW). There are cars which much flimsier build that are still in production - remember, the GenX Nano XTA was 765 KG GVW compared to, say, the Baleno hatch which was 855 KG GVW when it launched. It will probably not pass GNCAP, which is probably one of the reasons why Tata is not doing this under their logo.

So a Nano with at least driver aribag, if not dual airbags, electric power train, and a better suspension thanks to the battery pack's weight - should be definitely interesting. But I don't think it will be cheap - should be in the 7 lakhs range for private buyers, who do not get the FAME benefits.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Why can’t Tata themselves launch it with some styling tweaks?

Just perfect for city runabouts and would make a lot more sense as an EV. One thing people hated about the Nano was it’s unimpressive sound and now with that gone, hope people like these.

Hope the range stays good to the claimed figure. Looking forward.

The Jayem Neo is now part of Tata Motors. If Neo EV has to hit showrooms, it would share display area of Nexon EV.

“Further to this, JTSV will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, following the completion of the procedural requirements," the carmaker said in a regulatory filing.

Good point. I wish it comes in 2 variants, if not more, with different battery ranges. One with 150km (200 as per ARAI) and within 5-6L budget. It addresses most of the small car buyers who mostly don't use it for large distances or use as city runabout second car. This should have all the basic necessities of a EV and airbags.
Second should be a premium one with large Nexon battary (if it can accommodate) and reduced power for even longer range. This should be with good safety pack like Airbags, ABS, ESP, Hillhold and in the price range of 8-10L that addresses highway users with limited luggage. The range could go around 400km (470 for ARAI).

Knowing Tata, I know I am daydreaming. But Tata listen to feedback too, so why not?

Because they probably don't want to deal with the PR nightmare and sales disaster they had to deal with when they launched the original Nano.

If they launch it again, everyone will call it "The cheapest electric car". Tata has built up a good image now. Maybe not premium, but at least people consider them well designed, good looking and safe.

The Nano doesn't fit that image. They have barely succeeded in rubbing of the "Tata for Taxi" tag. A new "Cheapest Electric Car" Tag might rub off on all the Tata models, owing to our Indian mindset.

We don't know if this is a production ready model or just a final Prototype/proof of concept to show the bosses and nudge them into green lighting the project.

Out of the question, guys. The Nano is R.I.P. This would either be an old car, a fun project or a test bed for a developed EV kit. There is no way we're seeing a Nano EV in showrooms.

Re: Jayem Neo – Tata Nano EV to be launched on Nov 28, 2017

Few points observed on the Neo EV.
1. No front fog lights.
2. Beautiful alloys.
3. No driver side airbags (horn pad has no mention).
4. Gear stick same as XTA, including M + -.
5. Coins slot (not available on XTA)

Yup guys it's a 2 year old project , might be shelved now . Some of these prototypes are used by OLA in Hyderabad it seems ? Any news on that ? Here is a report from Autocar India, which was shared in 2018.
