Toyota & Lexus' full model range to be electrified by 2025

Toyota & Lexus' full model range to be electrified by 2025

Toyota has revealed that all models the cars in the Toyota and Lexus line-ups will come with hybrid or electric powertrains from 2025. The line-ups will consist of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

With this announcement Toyota and Lexus join manufactures such as Volvo and Maserati among others, who have already committed to producing only electric vehicles in the future.

Toyota has been working on developing a solid-state battery which it claims will have a longer life, higher capacity and improved safety over current Lithium-ion technology. Simultaneously, the company plans to work on making an updated prismatic battery with Panasonic. Prismatic batteries are lighter and thinner than conventional ones. Toyota has been using the same technology in the under-floor batteries in the Prius.

Toyota plans to have 10 BEVs in its line-up by 2020 starting with China, followed by Japan, India, US and Europe. It has planned expansion programmes for FCEVs for the commercial and passenger segments in the 2020s.

Over the last 20 years, the Japanese carmaker has managed to sell 11 million hybrid and electric vehicles including the Prius. The company is aiming to have annual sales of more than 5.5 million electrified vehicles including 1 million zero-emission vehicles by 2030.

In India, Toyota has tied up with Suzuki to produce mass market electric cars. The company had also announced that it would conduct a study on the feasibility of introducing electric and hybrid cars in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
