Mahindra Electric showcases it's "MESMA" platform

Mahindra & Mahindra showcased it's all new MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture) platform recently at the 2018 Auto Expo.

Developed entirely from scratch, the all-new platform sees the Lithium-ion battery pack integrated into the floor, thus enabling maximum cabin space to be freed up while also helping in getting a low center of gravity to enhance car stability.

The effective driving range on cars developed on the MESMA platform would be between 240-390 kms on a single charge (depending on the battery pack), which can be extended to nearly 600 kms, as claimed by M&M.

A whole new range of models from the M&M stable are set to be developed with the MESMA underpinnings, the first of which will be out by 2021.

Further, M&M will develop a larger MESMA-2 platform for bigger, full-sized SUVs.

Both platforms will have support for 4-wheel drive setups as well.

Quote:
The platform can support multi-motor configurations with a single 50kW motor at the rear, or a combination of two motors, one each at the front and back, thus, catering to a diverse range of vehicle segments. The company is also looking to integrate the motor control unit as well as the power electronics inside the system so as to enhance the compactness of the whole architecture.

According to Steeven Woolley, CTO, Mahindra Electric, “After introducing the first product, we would be bringing out a new offering, based on MESMA every 12 months, utilising the flexibility of the new platform. The design of the battery module enables us to go from a 21kWh to 304kWh battery pack, which translates to an effective range between 240km to over 390km on a single charge. The wheelbase could also be extended by up to 300mm and the extra under-seat storage could then be leveraged to further enhance the battery capacity from 34kWh to 54kWh and shoot the range to up to 590km as per the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) tests.

An SUV is an ideal opportunity to put in individual motors at each wheel. We will look for four-wheel-drive setups with such layouts and with regard smaller cars, while hub motors have been in development since a long time now, but, there still remains a challenge to incorporate the brakes along with the motors. Tremendous work is being done to resolve this packaging constraint and the next two to five years will see a lot of new technology being coming out,” he added.

While the MESMA is good to spawn compact crossovers, more in lines of the Mahindra KUV100 in size and heft, Mahindra Electric will eventually develop a MESMA-2 platform, which will see mid-size and full-sized SUVs being formulated using a dual-motor setup for more power and torque. The multi-motor layout will also help in choosing from a variety of drivetrain options, including concentric gearboxes which offer better efficiency. For small and medium cars though, Mahindra Electric will consider putting a single motor driving the rear wheels, in order to get smaller turning radius with such a setup, which is a crucial feature to have for city driving.

The all-electric version of the SsangYong Tivoli (codename: E100) undergoing cold-weather testing in Sweden is a significant catch because the SsangYong Tivoli electric is slated to be the first production model on the made-in-India MESMA or Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture.
The Tivoli electric’s sub-four-metre cousin, the Mahindra eXUV300, will be the first model in India to be built on the MESMA platform. The 350V architecture, and the Mahindra eXUV300 it will underpin, got their first showing at Auto Expo 2020.
Quote:
While SsangYong and Mahindra have not disclosed an official range, it is learned that the E100 has been consistently delivering in between 400-450km on a full charge. The E100 is expected to use a near-60kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will power a 150kW (or 204hp) electric motor. A more affordable version with a smaller battery pack and range of about 300km is also known to be in development. The SsangYong E100’s powertrain will be made in India at Mahindra’s new EV production facility at Chakan near Pune
The SsangYong E100 or Tivoli electric will go on sale in Korea within this year, with a Europe launch to follow soon. At Auto Expo 2020, Mahindra had revealed a ‘late 2021’ launch for the eXUV300.

Don't know if anyone has seen this attached page before. The platform can be scaled for upto 80kWh battery packs and 375bhp in dual motor configuration.

That page looks like a concept of the concept vehicle that Mahindra hopes to build one day.

From having the first mover advantage, they seem far too behind in the EV race now. The only prototypes seen on road are for KUV. I seriously hope they have a strong pipeline of EVs ready, skipping KUV and starting with XUV300 instead.

The Tivoli EV is already ongoing tests. Being the same platform, putting in the MESMA 350/380 in XUV 300 won't take much time for Mahindra if they try even a bit. But it's Mahindra and they take their own time. The Tivoli EV has a 60kWh battery for a 400-450km range and a 204bhp motor.

Tivoli is history now as Mahindra has let go of Ssangyong. They need to start afresh or configure the XUV300, which is a chopped Tivoli. In either case, it's not going to be an easy plug and play launch of this new EV, they need to perform rigorous tests before the launch. The fact that there are no spotting of test vehicles doesn't bode well for their "MESMA" plans.

Re: Mahindra Electric showcases it's "MESMA" platform

Mahindra is very late and missed a golden opportunity. Please remember it took more than a year for Nexon EV to get accepted, while Kona and MG are still in 2 and 3 digits.

All the 3 are working to launch new EV models with higher range, but XUV 300 EV is still late. Expectation is it should give better range and still cost need to be competitively placed with Nexon.

The first mover advantage, we are talking about acquiring Reva and eVerito. But Tata's were making working prototypes of EV since Indica V2, Vista and Bolt cars, which were part of EV shows in Europe widely available for testing for Car magazines.

Also we read about - Especially in Norway, they were giving the car for Beta testing to customers for the free of cost, except car's usage and GPS data was getting shared to the company. So the expertise was built for long time, and made production version on Nexon in short time.

Somehow the front light cluster looks like a Ford EcoSport.
