- Taycan will have more than 600 horsepower from the electric motors

- The battery is to give the car a range of over 500 km

- Acceleration is from 0 - 100 km/h is under 3.5 seconds.

Quote:
The batteries that will make it into the Taycan will be capable of fast charging. While being compatible with 400-volt technology chargers, the battery can take its juice from 800-volt systems, meaning a range of four hundred kilometers (248 miles) can be achieved in just fifteen minutes of charging.

Porsche estimates it will be manufacturing 20,000 Taycan models per year, roughly two-thirds of the current sales figures for the 911.

Re: Porsche's 1st all-electric car named Taycan

Porsche to increase Taycan production, due to strong demand for the electric sports car.

Quote:
Porsche initially estimated it would sell 20,000 units per year of the all-electric Taycan. But after receiving so many early reservations, the automaker decided it will build more to meet the strong demand.

The higher-than-expected volume will be split between the sedan and the Cross Turismo variant. Speaking to WirtschaftsWoche, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said, "Due to the positive response, we will adjust this number upwards, especially since the Cross Turismo as the first derivative of the Taycan got green light for the series."

Norway is one of the markets that showed high demand. Porsche received nearly 3,000 reservations with deposits, but it usually only sells around 600 new vehicles in the market each year.

Porsche will begin production of the Taycan in mid-2019. It will be built in a new production facility in Zuffenhausen. In a recent press release, Member of the Executive Board for Production Albrecht Reimold revealed Porsche is prepared for more volume, giving the Taycan facility its own paint shop and assembly line. Reimold said, "We took the decision to build a new paint shop and assembly area as we firmly believe the Taycan has the potential to sell more than just 20,000 units per year. The new manufacturing facility gives us the requisite flexibility for the future."

The Porsche Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E, will achieve a total system output of more than 600 hp with the help of two permanently excited synchronous motors. Porsche estimates a 0-60 run of less than 3.5 seconds. It should also run more than 300 miles on a single charge with an 800-volt battery. A Targa version will come later, according to reports.

Re: Porsche's 1st all-electric car named Taycan

Based on all I've read so far, the Taycan has a lot of promise. It's going to be the 1st real competitor to Tesla in the high-end segment.

Sensible words:
Quote:
Getting into a car and doing 0-to-60 mph in less than three seconds—can you really differentiate yourself if you do it in 2.8 seconds, and the other can do it in 2.7?

There are other factors that will gain importance, such as charging time.

Porsche Taycan: 100 km charge in 4 minutes

According to a media report, the upcoming Porsche Taycan electric vehicle (EV) can add almost 100 km to its range after charging for just 4 minutes.

Porsche's 1st all-electric car named Taycan-p18_0469.jpg

The Taycan, which is a 4-door sedan, is expected to come with an 800V battery and can absorb fast-charging rates of up to 350 kW. The report claims that the charging rate is faster than what Tesla owners can achieve at the supercharging stations, which are rated at 120 kW. The Tesla supercharging stations can charge batteries to 80% in around 30 minutes.

The report also suggests that the marketing technique used for performance electric cars will change. 0-100 kph in 3.0 seconds or 2.7 seconds will no longer matter. The charging time is expected to be considered as the most important factor and fast charging will be used as a tool to market the cars. This marketing would be necessary to ensure that the customers overcome the fear of being stranded with a dead battery.

Porsche has reportedly partnered with Electrify America and Taycan customers will have access to 300 highway fast-charging stations, which could have at least two 350 kW chargers. Additionally, 120 Porsche dealerships are expected to offer fast charging stations.

In an effort to reduce range anxiety among its customers, Porsche is expected to spend US $6.8 billion on electrification by 2022.

The total power output in the Porsche Taycan is expected to be more than 600 bhp. The car is likely to have a range of almost 500 km and is expected to compete with the Tesla Model S when it is launched later this year.

Very curious to see the car once it's tested by people who matter. I actively follow this guy Bjorn Nyland who does efficiency tests and all sorts of things. For the sake of the world, and moving away from fossil fuels, I hope Porsche does a good job with the efficiency. Recently Audi just launched the e-Tron, but it's so so inefficient compared to even older Tesla models. I hope Porsche have a better time with that. After all, charging time matters less if you have to charge less!

Interestingly, Electrify America - the VW company building chargers as a penalty for their dieselgate scandal - have just shut off their 350 kW chargers because of cable problems. I'm sure these will be solved, but that level of power is incredibly high and tough to cool at high ambient temperatures.

Secondly, Tesla's top speed is 120 kW, so at top speed, the super efficient Model 3, which goes 6km per kW can basically get about 35-45 km in 4 minutes. Tesla have been teasing a new Supercharger which will take that up to 50-60 km.

What actually is important in all of this is the range as well. I can pretty much drive 250 miles/400km before the Model 3 runs out of battery. For me, this distance I cover is just about enough, because in 4 hours I'm hungry and need to use the toilet. So for range anxiety, we essentially need a car with 4-5 hours highway range that can recover this range in a 25 minute meal break. After that is universally achieved, bye bye fossil fuel!

Of course, for daily driving, nobody ever uses more than half their battery, so charging at home makes living with an EV super convenient. Imagine having fuel every morning to drive without ever stopping at a petrol pump!

Sorry I keep using Tesla as the benchmark - it's currently the only one that can do long distance driving.

Just for everyone's information, it’s pronounced “Tie-Kahn”.

I have also been saying it wrong all this time, until I heard the correct pronunciation on the below video this morning, which caused me to Google it, and this is what I found

Re: Porsche's 1st all-electric car named Taycan

The higher than normal (for Porsche) profile gives the game of the 'expected' underfloor power packs away. Obviously it will be a 4WD with power apportioning. The normal front to aft ratio will be of interest.

This should trigger more development. Let is see how Maruti & Tata respond. The trend is clear. OPEC cheats can sing for it.

Porsche Taycan caught charging!

Porsche's 1st all-electric car named Taycan-1.jpg

Quote:
The exact details of the powertrain are not entirely known. What is known is that the Taycan will be fitted with a battery capable of over 500 km (311 miles) of range and fast charge to a range of four hundred kilometers (248 miles) in just fifteen minutes.

The car will use two permanently synchronous motors (PSM) to drive its wheels – one for each of the axles - similar to the ones deployed on the 919 Hybrid race car and capable of developing 600 horsepower

The base version of the Porsche Taycan is going to have a ~90 kWh battery pack for about 250 miles of range.

The German automaker has also been hinting at two higher-end versions with greater capacity and over 300 miles of range.

All versions should be equipped with Porsche’s new 800-volt powertrain system able to charge at up to 350 kW.

Porsche's 1st all-electric car named Taycan-screenshot_20190316132244_twitter.jpg

Following the announcement that its Tesla rival will be on sale and on the road in 2020, Porsche has released more sketches teasing the design of the production-ready Taycan.

  • PORSCHE WILL INITIALLY PRODUCE BETWEEN 20,000 AND 25,000 TAYCANS PER YEAR
  • OVER THE AIR UPDATES FOR THE PORSCHE TAYCAN

Quote:
MISSION E CONCEPT SPECIFICATIONS
Power for the Mission E Concept car is quoted at 592bhp courtesy of two electric motors, with a technical make-up similar to those utilised in the 919 Hybrid LMP1car. 0-100kmph is dealt with in 3.5sec, and 0-200kmph is dispatched in ‘under 12 seconds’. The electric platform is supposedly capable of propelling the Porsche round the Nürburgring in less than eight minutes. Incidentally, the electric range for the concept is rated at 500km, putting it on a par with Tesla’s Model S P90D. Equipped with an 800V charger unit, 80 per cent of the full range can be replenished in 15 minutes. The car also has the provision for wireless charging.
